I don't have any video mods in my Duo and use composite video on a CRT, as NEC and Hudson intended. OG experience! That's good of you. although in the old forum I succumbed to the snobs there who turned their noses up at composite so I went all modded. The entirety of the classic gaming community is going crazy with improving their video signals. With folks who only have modern TVs then the input latency will have to be dealt with. Otherwise, if a guy like me who has options and can run composite on a CRT, then it's a lot less stressful to just ignore the majority and just enjoy your old games the way the original devs intended. I'm not saying I'm a purist as I do run component where I can, but seeing a composite signal doesn't turn me off anymore like it used to.

Mathius : I agree, depending on the system or where I'm displaying it. I'd argue that NES composite, for example, looks quite nice on a good CRT. On the other hand, feeding that same composite to my HDTV and letting it do the scaling looks horrendous. The RetroTink 2X makes things look a lot nicer, though. I actually haven't used the composite for more than a few minutes on my Duo given that it was modded for S-Video. If PC Engine composite quality stacks up well to NES composite quality, then I can definitely see rolling that way. If it gets down to Genesis level, though... woof. I did end up getting a SCART-to-Component box so I could get a decent signal out of my Genesis.

Just thought I'd post an update for everyone using S-video. If S-video is the primary thing you use only, There is a way to improve the video quality by disabling the luma signal that goes to the systems composite video. I tested it out today and the video quality is much better. No dithering at all now when the screen scrolls. Free free to PM me and I can try and talk you through the process if you are interested.

Anyone concerned about losing composite for better s-video should know that you can use a small s-video-to-composite adapter and get better quality composite.

yep, what you said exactly Black_Tiger. I posted a link for one in the repair section portion of the forums just now.

I have all four 16 bit machines and only play on CRT. The PCE is unmodded. The Genesis is s-video modded. The SNES is s-video, the MVS has everything but usually is hooked up s-video because I can’t seen any upgrade in the component output and s-video is a lot tidier.
It’s pretty much still 1999 around my place.
Dreamcast is hooked to a 17” SVGA CRT
PS2 doesn’t get played.
PS1 has its own screen.
My SNES/Genesis minis have only HDMI so the are hooked to...my XBR-960 which is a wide Sony HD CRT.

while I love modding systems and figuring out how it all works, I don't actually care a huge amount about video quality while I'm playing. I have some systems that are modded to output RGB for example, but even then I still use the same system with composite.
I can tell the difference, but past a certain point I just want to play the games.

So, is there an affordable way to capture proper 60 fps output from analogue consoles these days? Most of the cheap boxes only do 30 fps analogue.

So, is there an affordable way to capture proper 60 fps output from analogue consoles these days? Most of the cheap boxes only do 30 fps analogue. The Elgatos HD capture devices are affordable. You just need to upscale sub 480p video first. I know that at least the Elgato Game Capture HD takes component, composite and s-video, but you have to otder an adapter fir composite/s-video. I think that it also only does 60fps at 720p and the "Game Capture HD60" was the first to do 1080p 60fps. It's old enough now that you ahould be able to find one fairly cheap. The real issue for you is what you want to spend on an upscaler. At this point it's a worthwhile investment if you have any interested in capturing video or playing classic games on modern displays.

Seems like perhaps a RetroTink 2X might work pretty well for getting it into HDMI 480p.

If you get a decent upscaler, like the RetroTink Sarge suggested, you should be able to use just about any HDMI capture device. Getting something that can properly handle a 240p signal directly is going to be harder and probably more expensive. I haven't checked recently, but I know of very few devices that will accept 240p over component, for instance. I used to use the Hauppauge HDPVR Rocket, which definitely didn't, though it did alright with composite.

Going down that particular path would very assuredly put me into debt, so I don't even think about upscaling these days. Keeping my older computers in decent health like my MSX2+ and X68000 is enough headache for me at the moment.

Yeah. All that ish is just way too much work for me. If I didn’t have a half dozen CRTs laying around maybe I’d think differently but in what world would I ever get rid of them? Every month there’s a new doodad and every month a 27” Trinitron still looks better. You can either run a CRT or just constantly jerk with your setup A/B-ing countless doodads.
Oh, there’s a new device? Ah, my 19 year old JVC looks better. Time goes by. Oh, there’s a new device? My now 23 year old JVC still looks better. Oh, there’s a new device? My now 27 year old JVC still looks better....this cycle has been going since even before TVs were bad at SD! Even in the 90s people were line doubling with the XRGB2 because they hated scanlines. Now the thing is putting scanlines back in! It’s really quite a lot of cutting out a lot of work for oneself, IMO.

CRTs ain't gonna last forever. And I don't disagree, a good CRT looks fantastic. I've got a 32" Sony Trinitron myself that I use, and a Panasonic set (that somehow has component and composite but no S-Video!) ready to roll if needed. But I've had several CRTs crap out on me, and even this Sony has a few small issues, so... well, we'll see. Hope you've got someone around that can work on your stuff if it fails.
