I'm trying to identify which, if any, RPGs on the PC Engine included a battle setup where your character's position on the battlefield influenced their attacks. I'm not talking about front row/back row stuff. I'm talking about something more along the lines of Chrono Trigger or Lunar, where the characters are visible on the battle area, and not just isolated to one side of the screen.
I have no clue. Can someone with a clue enlighten me?

It's been a while since I've played most of these, but off the top of my head:
Emerald Dragon
Record of Lodoss War Record of Lodoss War II Fang of Alnam Order of the Griffon
Also depends whether or not you are as loose with the definition of "RPG" as Mega Drive fans.
Edit: I just re-read your post and realized that you weren't excluded single axis positioning beyond front/back row type stuff. So games like Anearth Fantasy Stories (where positioning is a major aspect of battles) would count as well.

Emerald Dragon is the main one that comes to mind.

Susanoou Densetsu
Edited: Hmmm, It seemed that the combats were only presented in an overhead perspective like Ultima and Emerald Dragon, but the characters never moved, so this game probably didn't count:
