I got Rhythm Heaven Fever (also known as Beat the Beat: Rhythm Paradise in EU) a few years ago for the Wii. Why? Well, the box illustration attracted me, looking like something in the vein of Wario Ware, and the price was unbeatable at 10 € new. Also, I was slightly intrigued by having seen Minus8's NSFW parody for Remix #10 before I even heard of the game. This is a rhythm game where you either have to tap the A-button or sometimes A + B at the same time. No motion controls, which is a plus. Don't concentrate too much on what's happening on-screen. Just watch the tutorial for every stage you are about to play and then listen solely to the music. It helps if you've got a screen-and-sound-setup with minimal lag. Why? Because the game is pretty petty when it comes to judging your tapping efforts. I'd suggest having a look at Remix #10 (the original safe version). It may spoil you by being a medley of every regular stage, but at the same time, there's much more to discover in the game. And you'll get a feel for the catchy music.

Never really played the series besides the "rhythm heaven" arcade machine near my house.

I just have beaten Remix #9 and am now on my way to the final stages. I can't wait to play Remix #10 finally by myself after all these years.

After something like twenty tries, I managed to get an "OK"-rating at Remix #10 at last. Now that I beat the main game, I'm looking forward to rank "Superb" in all the games, to unlock all the hidden minigames. Did you know that the European version has both the English and Japanese audio tracks? The US version doesn't. I prefer the English tracks, but I also play the Japanese ones sometimes too, just for fun. My favorite games are Packing Pest and the Karate Man. The latter one is great in 2-player-mode, too.

I agree. It’s awesome. It was only $30 new in the US when it came out.
I went to EB to get it and the guy harassed me for preorders and the Edge card *mercilessly*. After he asked me something I had already refused I told him that, no, nobody had taken time to explain to me the benefits of the Edge card, but I’d rather kill myself than sign up for it. He became very quiet and visably angry and after some silence he said that he didn’t appreciate me saying that very much because his mother killed herself recently. We then completed the conversation with him slamming the game/money/bag around and stuff in a theatrical way
So yeah, I agree, it’s awesome. Cheap too.

Yep. My Rhythm Heaven experiences from then on will always remind me of suicide. Thanks, EB!
