Been looking to broaden my horizons once again on PCE games. I am curious what people's top 10, to however many you would like to list, games are right now.
I am not really interested in US games or their Japanese counterparts. So try and keep the rank and file lists to pcengine Japanese only games. But I am sure no one will fault you if you list a US game etc.
I have been eyeing personally...
Anearth Fantasy Stories Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari Ninja Ryūkenden Shubibinman 1, 2 and 3 Dragon Slayer 2 Dragon Knight & Grafitti Basted Shin - Megami Tensei
However I have no idea if I can even play some of them with the language barrier.

I have always thought it would be more valuable to the novice TG collector/dabbler to identify the best entry-level/gateway games. Those are the ones that aren't too expensive or hard to find but still great fun to play.

Those are the ones that aren't too expensive or hard to find but still great fun to play. There are endless lists like this online, but too little talk about the better software in the library. Some of my favorites: Tengai Makyou Fuun Kabuki Den Tengai Makyou II Ys IV Neo Metal Fantasy Anearth Fantasy Stories Legend of Xanadu II Private Eye Doll Cobra II Sword Master Neo Nectaris Lapras no Ma Monster Maker Super Darius Super Darius II Cho Aniki Ai Cho Aniki Download 2 Gradius II Macross Eternal Love Song Cosmic Fantasy 4 Chapter 2 Gulliver Boy

I would start with a certain batch of cheaper Hueys that will introduce and solidify a growing love for the PCE's lovely sound capabilities. It's with these that your memories will be forged which you can look fondly back on. These were mine: Bonk's Adventure Blazing Lazers Military Madness Neutopia Legendary Axe Keith Courage Alien Crush Dungeon Explorer Air Zonk (Even though it has sadly gone up in price I feel the need to list this one.)

I can't look up what the latest versions of all of my guides, but here are old versions on Gamefaqs:
Includes guides for the following games:
Cosmic Fantasy 3 -someone covered the rest of the game after Hi Leg Fantasy erased my save file.
Neo Metal Fantasy -the best 16-bit-Phantasy Star-style game.
Popful Mail -one of the very best 16-bit games.
Tengai Makyo II -perhaps the best 16-bit game.
Here are a couple much more complete guides with full translations of items, spells, equipment, etc, plus actual maps:
Tengai Makyo Fuun Kabuki Den

I vote that this post gets a whole stickied thread of its own, similar to the one back at the old site.

River City Ransom is perfectly playable in Japanese if you've played through the nes version. It's a superb conversion!
My top 20 is gonna be missing plenty of RPGs, like Blood Gear and the Xanadu games which I have yet to play (will play 2 at some point)
This isn't in any real order, except my number one.
1. Bonk 2
Fatal Fury Special Rondo of Blood Ys IV Dawn of Ys Mr Heli Soldier Blade Outrun River City Ransom Bomberman 94 Parasol Stars Super Dodgeball Liquid Kids Darius Plus Salamander Gate of Thunder Air Zonk Truxton Wonderboy 3: Dragon Trap Dungeon Explorer Spriggan Mark 2
I also think Strider (if it had all the songs I'd rank it higher), Coryoon, 1943 Kai, Atomic Robo Kid, and Tenchi Wo Kurau all are rather overlooked

All these guides. I own all these games too. Never really played them yet. Looks like I will now.

And for some last spam.
Just bought
Shubibinman 1,2 and 3 River City Ransom Cho Aniki Ai Cho Aniki Anearth Fantasy Stories Sword Master Rapurasu No Ma
Not sure if the last one was the same game.you had in your list Black Tiger But it's the only one that showed up on the bay.
9 games... Total about $490 with all the shipping paid. River City Ransom was a bit hard to swallow but I went for it anyways. Hoping it is a Superior game to the NES counterpart.
Would still love to see people's lists. Buying spree inc....

I am not really interested in US games or their Japanese counterparts. So try and keep the rank and file lists to pcengine Japanese only games. Parodius Dragon Saber Spriggan (Star) Parodier Kato and Ken has farts, so it wins over lame spray paint on the US JJ and Jeff. I've been giving F1 Circus 92 a good shake...it's visually impressive(sound is no slouch either) but that top down view plus driving mechanics take time to master. It helps that it can be got for dirt cheap. Momotarou Katsugeki and SonSon 2 are good fun _IF_ you can pick them up for under $20. I'd say the same for L-dis...I recall NCSX dumping sealed ones for $10 way back, so I bought three; one for me and two for my obey buddies. I'm not one for RPGs, so I stick to arcadey type games but Anearth always looked good. I did mess with the english trans of Startling Odyssey 2, it seemed solid but I have no time for games like that nowadays.

Lukester... What's the difference between fatal fury and fatal fury special? I have fatal fury but not the special version. Fatal Fury Special is just an updated version of 2...it adds a few characters like Geese Howard though it cuts out the bonus levels and cutscenes. 2 and Special actually have different soundtracks on PCE. But then again, 2 and Special are different from each other on the genny and snes as well (SEGA CD Special is functional but looks like ass, though it has the benefit of being the easiest version). If we aren't talking about NEOGEO, then PCE Special is definitely the best home version! It's amazing how they squeezed in all the sprites, voice samples and enemy AI. Also has the breakable objects. Though it's not perfect, the snes has some parallax in backgrounds and Ryo is playable in single player. If you want to play 2 I would recommend the genesis version actually. It has a few tweaks to make it more fun (Turbo mode, playable bosses, easier desperation moves, Elimination mode, optional juggles) I always liked playing all the different home versions of Fatal Fury 2/Special, since they all have a different feel, sound, and sprite style. But if you only choose one, then PCE Fatal Fury Special is the way to go. Runner-ups are FFS snes and FF2 Genesis

To add to a previous post of mine. I bought Mad Stalker, Startling Odyssey 1 and 2, Kiso Louga 2, Stider, Quest Jongmaster, BAttle Field in Tokyo, Dragon Knight and Graffiti, Fatal Fury Special. Went mostly for ACD games. I think there are only 2 now I don't have of those. Fire Pro Female Wrestling and Madou Monogatari.
So far on the pce side of the fence. From the games I have played in the past my faves are.
Xak 1&2 (Using a guide) ... I need to play 3 yet as it is translated. Bomberman 94 Akumajou Dracula X Double Dragon 2 Daimakaimura Ys 4 translation Battle Lode Runner
