Well, hot diggedy dog. Here are our collective 16 favourite games for the PC Engine. Of course I don't agree 100%, but for the most part, these are games I'd expect to see in there. Besides, given the system has over 600 games, getting to our last 16 is no mean feat. Anything you guys want to rant about? Anything you think shouldn't be there? I think I'll skip the poll for today at least, and we can just gaze in wonder at the havoc we've wrought. Also, I might merge them to one bracket now we have space. *updated* - brackets merged.

That is extremely consistent with what my expectations were for this. There are a couple titles that aren't in the top 16 that I might have expected to see there, but there's nothing in the top 16 that doesn't belong or deserve the spot, that's for sure.

The top half of the red bracket is a bit surprising to me - what are you missing? I expected/hoped Spriggan would get to the last 16, and I expected both R-type and Galaga to go out earlier. I also did not forsee the love for Dungeon Explorer, and I've made a mental note to check it out

I was sort of expecting to see Military Madness make it to the top, or one of the Legendary Axe titles, or one of the Soldier games. And while all the Bonk and Bomberman titles in the top 16 are certainly worthy, I'm a little surprised to see two of each. Also two Ys titles. Had I the power to make substitutions those are where I would look for that opportunity.

Not very happy to see two Bonks, two Ys games and two Bomberman games.
Bonk 1 should've lost out to Soldier Blade but that's my opinion.
I think Ys IV will lose to I and II, despite being a better game.
I definitely agree with Black Tiger it's a shame Xanadu isn't on the bracket.

Titles that require Japanese language knowledge to fully appreciate are at an inherent disadvantage, but that can't really be helped.

Titles that require Japanese language knowledge to fully appreciate are at an inherent disadvantage, but that can't really be helped. Games without adequate guides are. Games like Neo Metal Fantasy and Legend of Xandu II do not have a language barrier for most to all of their menus, controls, etc. The better 16-bit RPG'ish games still tower over most 16-bit games when they aren't fully appreciated. CD games with good cinematics and voice acting (like Kabukiden) still deliver a more compelling story than text based RPGs, even while transcending the language barrier.

It may work well for you, but I'm not sure it does for others.

It may work well for you, but I'm not sure it does for others. That’s because BT wrote all of the guides for the games he mentioned, tbh
