Samsho II. A little more about footsies like good ol' Street Fighter II
Last Blade has those insane graphics but the characters are horribly generic looking

I dunno, I think there are some decent designs in Last Blade. If nothing else, the presentation is top notch. Anyhow, there's not much reason to play the first game if you have access to LB2, unless you're interested in the story.
But as to the original question, I agree SamSho II has that more old-school feel. Big damage isn't about combos so much as well-timed counter hits. LB is faster and more modern style, with big combos and more aggressive play. I'd say it depends on what you're in the mood for.

LB one to me had this underlying sadness to the story and music and overall tone that really set it apart. I haven’t played LB1 or 2 in awhile so the memories could be skewed. I liked Samcho1 when it came out but two, OMG what a game!

I haven’t played LB1 or 2 in awhile so the memories could be skewed. That's fair. I was mostly thinking gameplay. LB2 brings back all the old characters while adding the expected newcomers, including Hibiki, my favorite LB character. I admit it's been a while on my end as well, so I don't remember which systems were new for the sequel, but I'm pretty sure they didn't break anything. So, basically my thinking is LB2 has all the characters and features from the first game plus more.
