Adventure Island, AKA Dragons Curse, AKA Wonderboy III is a fun Master System conversion. This is one is a nice bridge between a light RPG and arcade action. I'd say it's a bit more like something like Links Adventure on the NES, or Bikkuriman World. You get to shapeshift into different monsters that can navigate the environment in different ways, which lends a nice bit of gameplay variation, and perhaps a puzzle element of sorts. Apparently the game isn't very long, but I really need to get around to playing this as it looks really good. The graphics aren't much of a jump from the Master System, but it's at least a very faithful port.
Splatterhouse is a pretty simple game, but its theme and big chunky sprites instantly set it aside from other brawlers of the time. Surely this game was responsible for some of the controversies around video game violence back in the day? The graphics aren't incredible, or at least they look a little bit dated, but that's looking back with hindsight. The game does a lot right, giving you weapons (including a branching path on the first level that rewards good timing) like shotguns and 2x4s, and making you feel suitably powerful as you smash enemies into the background. There are also a few surprises, along with a good story, and plenty of variation throughout the levels.

really difficult one today IMO. Both very good games, but I'm honestly unsure which one I prefer.

I've never enjoyed Splatterhouse. Dragon's Curse is one of my favorite games and is finally getting the attention it deserves.

FUCK! Don’t make me choose!
...Splatterhouse. It’s not a better game, but I love it.

New Adventure Island is fine but it never did that much for me. If I hadn't played both Wonderboy on SMS and Adventure Island on NES I might like it more, perhaps. As it was, I felt like I'd already played the game and I was never interested enough to get very far.
Splatterhouse, on the other hand, was a game that was shockingly cool in the arcades. I didn't have it until a bit later as my parents wouldn't buy me that particular game so that helped add to the mystique of the game. After I picked up the game a few years later, it was one of the titles in the short list of games I'd show people to convince them how cool the Turbografx was.

As cool (and rare) as video game gore was when Splatterhouse came out, Dragon's Curse is still the vastly superior game. Perhaps one day I'll learn to read!
