Air Zonk, is a Hudson adaptation of the prehistoric Bonk series into a futuristic shoot-em-up. As noted, the Cute-em-up Coryoon was something of a dry run for this game, featuring some similar mechanics. This game features a banging soundtrack, whacky enemies, and some top notch shooting action. This one is actually one on my fave shooters for the Engine, it's not too difficult, but it's also not afraid to try different things. You can join up with a friend halfway through a level to for a humungous beast with some insane firepower, or alternatively sometimes you can miniaturise yourself for help dodging bullets. Bosses are quite challenging, but very inventive (and very large). There isn't anything quite like this anywhere else, and it's great.
Wonderboy III is another arcade style platformer (with some shooting sections). It looks a tad dated, despite being a CD title, and it plays more like the Adventure Island series, or the original Wonderboy. It's a forced scroller, so you won't be able to do any exploring, it's a simple reaction-fest that sees you collect various power-ups and make it to the end of a stage, hopefully with a high score.

Monster Lair is one of my favorite PCE games and is the best version of the game. O can't think of a better example of how much a bgm soundtrack can elevate an already great game.
It's also the most fun I've had in a PCE game playing with another player. All of my girlfriends have loved it. It's accessible and rewarding.

Monster Lair is def a top tier game...fun, fast, colorful, GREAT tunes....but Air Zonk beats it in almost every aspect (though not by much).

Air Zonk always seemed pretty popular so I figured Wonder Boy III wouldn't fare well against it but I never really got into it and Wonder Boy III is a favorite of mine.
