Man.. hot take coming in, but I found new adventure island really dull. It's literally just jumping and firing, repeat. No exploring, no puzzles, no cool items (literally a skateboard to go faster doesn't count), the same enemies in different backgrounds...
And this is coming from someone who loves pacland. I think that gets a pass because of its age. But when did this come out? It's just a cheap arcade game, and given the fairly nice visuals, it could be doing something a bit more inventive. IN MY OPINION.

There are very few platformers as primal and instinctive as NAI. It's the essence of Super Mario Bros 1 on steroids, with killer visuals to boot. I also believe it's the only Adventure Island that has really good controls. You can stop on a dime and the jumping is perfect. I don't think it's an exaggeration. NAI really stands out in the 16-bit generation. Sure the Sonic games are speedy, but plenty of levels in between have slow, plodding sections or annoying jumping puzzles. NAI is go, go, go from start to finish. It's refreshing to have

I love the simplicity of New Adventure Island. It's about as "pure" a platformer as you can get. Shit, it could be revived as a mobile "runner" these days.

IN MY OPINION. I actually hate pac-land. To me, it feels sloppy and the running backwards after completing the level just feels doofy and a way to stretch the gameplay. Also, I can’t just over the water in one of the first few levels. It’s hilarioisly frustrating.

Haha I love that level. See that's the kind of thinking that NAI is missing.

For me the simplicity is part of the appeal of New Adventure Island, it keeps the pace up as there are not many parts of the game where you have to stop running.

My favorite platform is The Legendary Axe... sure it has some "cheap" moments but it's actually designed in a way that you can actually avoid those traps if you pay attention.
Except for Level 5L. Screw that! lol
Rondo of Blood is great and is one of the few games that have AAA production quality but it's kinda short so I wouldn't really say it's the best platformer. It's damn good though that's for sure

Some enterprising homebrewer needs to make us a traditional, head-stompin' platformer. Doesn't need to be Mario, naturally, but we have to prove our little Engine can handle head-stopmin'!

A lot of people hate the monkey pit stage, but if you climb the vine out of the first pit (with the spider and axe powerup), and jump out of the vine at a lower point, the screen isn't scrolled up and you can see where the pits are!

Exactly, this is one of the avoidable traps, and you don't even need to do that since the totem powerups usually stand on save floor. I do that vine thing when I play it, such as my 1cc here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRXdGgmxJ4E(see 17:50)

I'd like to pick Lo Hero Tomna but it's too short.
So for me it's gonna be between pc Genjin or Jackie Chan
EDIT:
Also Jigoku Meguri and yokai dochuki are great too
