Huh, you’re right. Legendary Axe did it much better.

Bonk's Adventure and Ninja Spirit have been long-time favorites of mine. I can't pick one over the other.
Recently I've really been digging both Genji Tsushin Agedama and Son Son II. Both are such amazing platformers and so Japanese that it's no wonder they never made it to the States.
Very recently, I've been addicted to FX Unit: Yuki. Dang this game is sweet!

PC kid 2 and PC kid, in that order, hands down. I wanted to say Shinobi just to be contrarian, but let's face it, it's Bonk.

For arcade ports, I'd say the best I played is Legend of Hero Tonma. Irem crafted a short-yet-sweet platforming challenge, taking the hop-n-bop and adding some visceral shooting elements. The cutesy veneer is belied by a take-no-prisoners difficulty level. Like most Irem conversions, not much is left out from the original and it remains a remarkably-constructed game - checkpoints I initially thought were impossible were all expertly-designed and manageable, and the game's later manic frenzy is a joy to survive. About the only thing I wish it had was a harder difficulty or loop a la Saigo no Nindou/Ninja Spirit. As for original? Hmm... does Genpei Toumaden Kannoni count? It's sort of a platformer! It's still one of the best, if not the best action game on the system. Sure, it isn't as good, weird, or striking as its arcade predecessor (a truly unique, one-of-a-kind game), but it refines the major gameplay elements of the first game (and its "Big Mode" in particular) into an engaging, more console-friendly environment. Add to that a hefty length of stages and some truly cool setpiece moments, and you have a minor classic on the system. The Bonk games never really grabbed me, nor did Capcom's Sonson II, which is often touted as one of the better platformers. Give me my janky and unwieldy Samurai Ghost!

Dragon Egg is another one I love. It doesn't get mentioned much. Even by the NEC circles. Check it out if you haven't already. Dragon egg is a fun game.

What's so great about Tiger Road? I never played it, but videos kinda make it look just average.

New Adventure Island, of course! The music, bright colors, and great visuals make for a well-polished game. It’s tough and fun at the same time.
I’m surprised to see Legend of Hero Tonma mentioned at all. I thought most people found it mediocre at best. Personally, I like it, but it’s far from my favorite.

Pretty much the exact same comment here as I like everything about this game and pretty much never get tired of it. It's one of the few games that I've beaten and then played over and over and over again just to see if I can get a higher score. The only thing is that once you beat it once beating it again is significantly easier, I was pretty surprised after the first time I replayed it after beating it. A close second for me is Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair even though it's only 1/2 a platformer and a somewhat different one at that because of the auto-scrolling. Didn't care for this one much at all the first time I played it but after giving it another shot I found it pretty addicting and this one, unlike New Adventure Island, really does not seem to get much easier at all after beating it, since the first time I beat this I've made it to the final boss only 2 more times and have never beaten him again. It gets frustrating because of the brutal difficulty in the later levels but the nice, colorful graphics, great music, and cool enemies keep me coming back.

I'm not big on platform games in general, but I do love Bonk's Revenge. It was one of the very few games I had in the early 90s.
I played through Aoi Blink somewhat recently. The easy difficulty is what I like about it. Also the music is great.
