From a Yuichi Toyama interview. ( source) "...Spriggan actually uses a lot of programming Takayuki Hirono created for the game Gunhed, and if that game hadn't existed, Spriggan probably wouldn't have either."Regarding Spriggan Mark 2" At the very start of development, I was actually intending for it to be a sequel to Musha Aleste. At least in my mind. In the opening cinema to Musha Aleste there's a character named Greg who gets shot down, and I was planning for him to be the main character for Spriggan Mark 2. But at the time, Compile was not a publisher, so we weren't able to develop games as sequels. We made it as a separate game. I believe Spriggan Mark 2 ended up being sold to the company who had published Seirei Senshi Spriggan, and since that game had sold well for them, they chose the title Spriggan Mark 2, so they could market it as a sequel to that game."He also notes that Assault Suit Leynos was a big influence in the development of Spriggan Mark 2, in terms of developing a story and animation.

This is fascinating, but not wholly surprising. Both of these games were among my first batch of shewties for my Turbo CD. They are almost painfully nostalgic.

You've convinced me to at least buy the kindle versions of those books. There's some really fascinating stuff in them, well worth it.

Skip the first volume. It is a total mess. The second is worth it as long as you don’t mind a lot of author/interviewer insertion.

The first volume has images, but none of them are captioned, many require really hunting through the text to put in context, and they aren't contrast adjusted well for the monochrome printing process used. I didn't find most of them very valuable to the text. Here, I'll link to my reviews at RB. I think the second volume is worth reading, but the first is a real mess. Volume 1 review www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=51397#p1101765Volume 2 review www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=51587#p1108856Oh, and depending on what kind of gamer you are and what your politics are, you may have to hold your nose (and your tongue) while reading the author's introduction to the 2nd volume. Even if you largely agree, the author is a massive self-promoter (and a pampered son of wealth, too, it seems).

Yeah, the authors introduction in volume 3 makes you almost not want to read the book. But you have to put him aside and just enjoy it for the interviews.
