I was wondering, if there is more information out there on the history of the Euro-release of the TG16. What I read so far was hearsay and copy-pasted assumptions of the same. Interested in details like: Who did the box art (and why it has so much in common with the GX4000 box)? Who imported the Canadian release games? Why are there so many loose new hueys in Europe? Why did they change the font and color on the console? Or even the details on these "licensing problems", if there even were any.

Grey is cool. Also there is a spelling mistake on the console box. Can’t remember what it is but it’s there.

I think so far there has been no concrete info on the Pal Turbografx, it's all been speculation.
If you trully wanted to search out facts I would start by finding out who ran Telegames at the time and try emailing them as my guess has been they were involved in the Pal Turbografx.

This sounds like great youtube video material aka Gaming Historian style. Good luck in your research!

I don't think that Telegames did anything but liquidated the unused stock after they bought it.

Sorry for the necrobump. Acquired a new old stock PAL TurboGrafx with separate accessoires box, both arriving yesterday. The spelling error on front and back of the box is 'Your TURBOGRAFX Entertainment SuperSystem Inculdes:' The EAN sticker on the bottom side of the box reads HES-TGX-11. Australian company Home Entertainment Suppliers (Supplies?) from my Atari VCS days comes to mind, but surely has nothing to do with this. On the top of the box the logo still says 'TURBOGRAFX 16'.
I remember that I read about 2000 PAL TurboGrafx manufactured in the Geeks-Line book, so that would be a pretty low run. Who knows for sure...
I already have a white Japanese PC Engine and a Japanese Duo-R in my collection, but I ordered a HuCard adapter now on eBay nonetheless.

Whenever anyone quotes an actual number of units produced/sold of anything, demand proof or just ignore it. Especially PCE stuff as there are almost no reliable numbers for anything. Two thousand seems crazy low but then I don’t even know who financed this thing. If it was all NEC I’d really doubt that number. Even if they actually sold all 2000 they’d still lose money. Stuff like this doesn’t turn a profit until huge numbers are reached. NEC got drunk on eBay one night and pulled the trigger on half a million US TGs despite only selling a tiny fraction of that. They loooooved to make stuff. Btw, I’m not sure if you know this based on your post but you won’t be able to play US(EU) games on a PCE with an adaptor. You also have to ground a wire inside the system…so since it requires at least minor mod work most people just do the whole mod.

SignOfZeta Thanks for the clarification on the low numbers. Possibly you got me wrong as I have plenty of Japanese HuCards for the PC Engine, but I want to also play them on the PAL TurboGrafx, hence the adapter. Do I still need to ground a wire in the PAL TurboGrafx then?

Ah, no. Converters work fine for playing JP stuff on US/EU hardware, just not the other way around.

Huge thanks, SignOfZeta. Very likely just want to try out some games only once with 50Hz I re-read the statement about PAL TurboGraphx quantities in the book, and they state 2500, but explicitly say that that is unconfirmed. So, no one will ever know for sure.

In video game land, “unconfirmed” is a weasel word meaning “I made it up”.

So, no one will ever know for sure. I bought a PAL TG16 as well to try out some games in 'PAL' mode. I actually ended up liking a lot of the games in 50hz mode hahah. Some games do have slower much, but not all (ones that use the TIMER for audio don't have slower audio/music). You get used to the 50hz slower rate pretty quickly. I've also played CD games with PAL TG16. Every game I tried worked fine, except cinemas will drift off sync from the visuals because almost all games use frame vsync as a measure of time keeping.

Haha, turboxray - nice to hear. Possibly I don't suck at shooters that much when played in 50hz
