I'm eager to revisit a lot of old Speccy games but I'm waiting for my Next to arrive before I really delve into them.
But there's always the typical classics like Cybernoid, Jetpac, Deathchase, Wheelie, Tau Ceti...too many to list. Also the homebrew scene is buzzing at the moment with a lot of new titles.

I had similar-ish experience to JapJac, in the mid 80s my parents bought me a spectrum for my Birthday and I hated the thing. I would play the awesome arcades in my local chippy or in seaside arcades (Brighton, Margate) and go home and see my Spectrum and think it was a pile of sh1t. The thing never even loaded most of the time with "tape loading error" after you'd been sitting there for 10 minutes waiting.
Literally what got me heavily into gaming is the very beginning of the UK import era in the late 80s, seeing the PC Engine run R-Type, it was the arcade experience at home, I never looked back.

I flipping loved the Spectrum. I started with an Acorn Electron, and the highlight of my month was reading the fantastic Your Sinclair. My friend remained a lifelong fan and still programs games.
However, I will say that there are still some fantastic arcade conversions on the speccy, but I think you have to come at it from the Spectrum-first perspective. Stuff like Midnight Resistance, Strider, Shadow Warriors, St Dragon and Dragon Breed (the St Dragon-like shoot em up) are great games. I think the Gi Joe/Action Man game was amazing too, but that might have been C64.
Other amazing games are: Dizzy, Treasure Island Dizzy, Fantasy World Dizzy, Quaztron, and Chaos. I think Super Sprint was pretty good too, but I would have probably been happy for years with the titles I've mentioned in this post
