I've recently seen Ready Player One. I really enjoyed it, and it's given me hope that Spielberg isn't losing his touch with spectacle movies. I've not read the book and it seems that a lot of people who have are very critical of how the movie was handled, so I'm glad I went in fresh. Watching videos of that VRChat, I can see that it's probably quite an accurate depiction of how a whole VR world could be in the future.

I went to see A Quiet Place, and thought the creature design was generic and the whole movie was just a two hour version of the basement scene from Spielberg's War of The World remake. Hide, be quiet, jump scare, wash rinse repeat. Not impressed at all.

After learning recently that Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday) had died, myself and a cinephile friend decided to have a little Takahata retrospective when I came to visit. We watched his first feature film Horus (from his Toei days) and ended with his last film Kaguya, thus bookending his entire career. Horus was honestly a bit of a rough watch, the screenplay was rushed and leapt from event to event without giving the characters any time to breathe, among other questionable decisions like at one point having a talking squirrel be the voice of morality. I liked some of the scenes with Hilda, though, and I swear that the part where she's introduced in a ruined town singing a lovely song was referenced later by Hideaki Anno in Evangelion when Shinji meets Kaworu (the composition in both scenes is just so similar, at least from my recollection of the latter, and she's a similar type of character, plus the singing--maybe I'm reaching, though). Kaguya was beautiful--I'd easily put it up there with Grave of the Fireflies and Only Yesterday. The appearance of Buddha at the end filled me with true terror.
Next time I go to visit my friend we're probably going to watch Porco Rosso and The Wind Rises. Porco Rosso will be a rewatch, but I've never seen The Wind Rises. We might also watch a few episodes of Heidi, Girl of the Alps.

Just rewatched The Breakfast Club. Still an amazing film that manages to capture the essence of that teenage feeling perfectly. One of Hughes' best, along with Ferris.

Those are two of my favorites of his. Planes, Trains & Automobiles is another one. I really want to see Ready Player One. I've read the book and listened to the audio book a few times (long work commute), so I've been nervous because there really is NO WAY the book can accurately be turned into a 2-2.5 hr movie, but I'm hopeful that Spielberg can capture the essence and keep it entertaining. It sounds like he has. I think I read that Ernest Cline is already working on a sequel, which I bet will be developed as a movie simultaneously.

Finally finished Rogue One on Netflix with the wife. I think we both liked the atmosphere of the movie quite well. Very classic Star Wars.

Just watched John Wick 1 & 2. I thought he first was OK, but in the second I think they really hit their stride and it was more interesting, both visually and the action scenes. Looking forward to no 3 now.

Recently watched through all 3 of the original TMNT movies. The first one is still the best, funny and quotable. The second is decent enough. The third isn't great with the costumes looking worse, TV-style lighting and the interaction between the brothers just isn't as amusing. "Pizza Dude's got 30 seconds." "Mmm, hmm."

Just watched The Red Turtle. Wonderful visuals and animation, holds your attention surprisingly well for a movie with no dialogue. Recommended.

The announcement for the upcoming Return of the Living Dead 2 BD got me to give my old DVD one last spin this weekend. It's definitely inferior to the first movie but the first movie, imo, is kind of a masterpiece so it would be surprising to see it topped by a sequel anyway. I do kind of wonder how much I would like this now had I not liked it so much as a kid but I'm looking forward to the new BD regardless.

Really enjoyed it, very funny and on par with the first. End credits bit is priceless.

Solo: A Star Wars Story.
After The Last Jedi did a huge shit on the franchise, things could only get better. Although it has a few issues, Solo is generally a fun scifi action flick. TLJ made me stop seeing new SW movies as a big event to look forward to, because they just don't have the Lucas magic, but I enjoyed Solo enough to secure a purchase when it's out on Bluray.
