I noticed Mesen has now support for PCE, awesome! Profiler in action see attachment. Oh wow, I wasn't expecting function names in the profiler window !! turboxray would know this better than I would, but... I seem to recall that it might have needed something like reducing the channel volume to zero, making the update, then raising the channel volume again.

As far as music goes, unfortunately my first true foray into this game was on the 3DO, and if I'm remembering right, the 3DO has completely different music. I believe the original Creator wasn't happy with the 3DO version. So yeah the Sega CD music would be the most appropriate, even though I greatly prefer the 3DO music because of nostalgia. It's not that I didn't play it on SNES or Genesis, I just never owned it on either of those or on any computers or anything.
This is probably blasphemy, but one thing I've always wondered is what this game would like with regular sprite and tile art rather than poly's or pre-rendered or whatever. It would be neat if someone could do a project like that someday but that's just my opinion, and it's probably just asking too much in general since none of us have all the time in the world. Either way this looks great!

There is no buffering of audio and the CDROM can only do one thing at a time - either read/play music, or read data (or idle). There’s also the option for super low quality streaming audio which allows the CDROM to read in spurts, often mixed in and out with chip tunes. This is done on lot of later digital comics to disguise loading. Super low quality audio? That kinda reminds me of the Strider port on PC Engine CD, the stage end screens look great but the streamed music sounds compressed as hell

If I'm remembering right the redbook audio versions of those tracks were on the CD but for some reason they decided to just do an ADPCM sample? And at especially low quality on an arcade CD game no less.

I don't think you can use the OKI chip for sample playback during CD data loading at all.
