Update after 4 weeks. - fixed rendering bugs - ressources are converted from the DOS version: palettes color depth, the few bitmaps and polygon vertices are automatically scaled to the PCE resolution. - with all the ressources embedded in the rom, all levels are playable. - background bitmaps are loaded (none in this video). Out of the 94 screens, 10 have a bitmap BG. - "transparency" drawing implemented. - many optimizations, framerate is up by 30-40%. Update video: youtu.be/jiY6zWx0ygoTime to start working on adding the sound effects (exclusively PCM samples in the original game), the missing graphic functions (point primitive, font redering, partial framebuffer copying for scrolling).

Wow, you've got a nice frame rate on it and it looks pretty good to boot. Looks like you're on-track to be competitive with the other console releases of this, which I think is very impressive.

I am curious about sound effects and music... The first version of this game I ever played was on the SNES and I always loved the ambient soundtrack for the alien world. Will this project be on Super CD or HuCard or something else? If it's on CD, will you include a redbook soundtrack? Thanks again!!

SNES has added musics that the original game didn't have, it had just some ambient sounds to feel more the loneliness. The more I think about it, SCD could be a better fit so yeah, it would get the OST (like the mega CD version) as redbook.

Basic CDRom question - can the CD play a redbook track while loading data (through some buffering of the audio track?) or is the track playing interrupted right away?

There is no buffering of audio and the CDROM can only do one thing at a time - either read/play music, or read data (or idle).

There is no buffering of audio and the CDROM can only do one thing at a time - either read/play music, or read data (or idle). There’s also the option for super low quality streaming audio which allows the CDROM to read in spurts, often mixed in and out with chip tunes. This is done on lot of later digital comics to disguise loading.

You must be talking about pre-loading ADPCM, and playing it inbetween CD audio, while loading more ADPCM each time data is fetched.

Yeah! Whatever Gunbuster does. Lots of games do it, even Ys I&II, but you’ll hear it for hours playing Gunbuster.

The original game uses only PCM four sounds effects and music.
I am trying to stream a ~7k PCM using a 32 bytes waveform (DDA would be too costly). It works fine but I stumble on the clicking issue that happens when disabling a channel to be able to upload the waveform before re enabling the channel, at this frequency this makes a buzzing sound (doesn't occur on the revised chip like SGX has).
I read about the 2 channel method, and tried to alternate between - select #0 and disable / select #1 , update waveform and enable and - select #1 and disable / select #2 , update waveform and enable
but it's not working. What is the correct method to get rid of clicks?
lda samplePSG_Channel sta psg_ch inc and #1 sta samplePSG_Channel
lda #%00011111 sta psg_ctrl
lda samplePSG_Channel sta psg_ch
lda #%01011111 sta psg_ctrl lda #%00011111 sta psg_ctrl
;map PCM lda sampleBankIdx tam #4
;copy 32 5 bits samples lda (sampleBankAddress) sta psg_wave inc sampleBankAddress ;repeat 31 times [...]
lda #%10011111 sta psg_ctrl
