While there's some variation on old and new boxes, there was a pretty distinct line between the old orange label games, and the colored end cap/black label games. The boxes put the image for the game in the square, and didn't wrap the color border all the way around the box. While the art in the old games is notoriously bad, this question isn't so much about the art, as the design that surrounds it.
I personally hate the orange label on the cases. They're hard to read.

I think the old style is more consistent. The later style CAN look better, but it depends a lot on the box art, whereas the older style helps mediate that a little bit. Basically it comes down to consistency vs variability, and I like the consistency of the older releases.

Full art on box and art on card make it a no brainer for me for the later released games.
