man, this is a difficult question.
So there was the Super Nintendo. When I was growing up, it was THE system to own. I got to play a friends Megadrive, but I didn't get many opportunities to play the SNES. And when THE game came o ut (Street Fighter II), people just went nuts. There were 8 page magazine spreads, it was on the cover of just about every magazine - it just eclipsed everything. Eventually I got one, and had my lil hobby going around second-hand shops hoovering up loose carts. (I got Secret of Mana and Megaman X for 50p among other things). I lent my SNES to a friend once, and it was in limbo for years. I eventually got the games back (thank god) but he'd tried to paint the console red, and had broken it. I'm glad just to have the games back. Since then, I've built my collection up to about 70-80 titles, and it's ALL killer, no filler. I could stick my hand in that box and be really happy playing whatever I pulled out.
Next is the NES, which I had a similar relationship with. Never had one until they were being sold for £5 in second hand stores, and games were all about £2. I've mentioned this before (and god does this hurt to remember) I lent it to my girlfriend while she was in hospital, whereupon she dumped me (thanks Emma) and the NES made it's way to her friend. I had multiple opportunities to collect it, but I'm an idiot, and her mother eventually threw them out, apparently. I've since built my collection up stronger than ever, up to about 80 games, and there's about 7 games left on my to-get list. It cost me more than it would have if I'd retained my original collection, but again, it's all good.
GBA - keeping it Nintendo here, this was something I saved up for, and I still have my OG arctic white GBA, and all the boxed games I bought either myself or recieved as gifts. Zelda LTTP (first time I played it through) Yoshi's Island - it was the second coming of the SNES. And portable! This system has some of my all time fave games. Advance Wars. Golden Sun. Yoshi's Island. Racing Gears. And I have a lot more to discover too, I still haven't played the megaman X series for example, or Kirby and the Amzing Mirror. The best reason to own a Gamecube (for me at least) is a Gameboy player.
The Original gameboy, I'll keep it short, but despite all its faults, it was a system exactly of its time. I dipped in around the beginning when I got an OG system and games, and then I got back again around pokemon with a GB pocket, which I still have, and I never really left. There are some expensive games, but as far as bang for your buck goes, I will totally rock a gameboy. Shoutout to Mole Mania, Links Awakening and Donkey Kong '94
The Megadrive was also a great system. I have a lot of time for it, but it's no longer among my favourites. I haven't played it in a long time. We had a Megadrive in the pub for a while and those were actually the days. I lent them 2 pads and some games, and we had some great nights in there playing Micro Machines 4 player, or Streets of Rage. I can't believe nothing got stolen. It's got a place in my heart when I got a literal bucket of loose games for £20, and me and my best friend at the time basically shared the system. She had it for years when she moved away, and now I have it back. It's also the first system I modded, a horrific region mod that ruined a soldering iron, but surprisingly works. I do want my multimega back though. That will haunt me.
Sony PSP - being a fan of portables (my first engine was a GT), the PSP was a no brainer, order from Japan asap. Me and my housemate both got the white ceramic PSP, and oh man what an unboxing that was. I remember Sony actually destroyed a popular import business - the same one I used to get my PSP. Everyone I knew had one. We played burnout on the bus to work, we played GTA AT work (it was a call center, we had a 4 player game of GTA going on most of the day). Then we got into Monster Hunter, and I lost well over a thousand hours to that game. I think that's the record of my most played game, Destiny second. But man I was good at it. I still love the PSP, although I feel like almost all of the greatest games, I've already played. You kind of had to dig deep to find the best games among a lot of mediocrity, but it was great. The Vita was a bit of a flop, comparatively.
Xbox 360. Probably this console took over my "most used" title, since I used (and still use it) for media etc. But it was the first console that really did online multiplayer well. I had a good time with Call of Duty (MW2 obvs), but games like Braid and Limbo really stand out for me. And Destiny. Played a lot of Destiny. I stayed up to pull an all nighter the day before a flight to Italy to be able to get a Destiny T-shirt. And then I got an Xbone to continue playing it.
And Lastly, the Wii and PS2. Both really solid consoles if you ignore the shovelware. Fun fact, I own all but one Singstar discs for PS2, so we occaisionally have fucking awesome drunken kareoke nights at my house.

Famicom/NES - Just a great system all around. Great 1st party controllers, being able to use a wide range of controllers (many of which are radically different than one another), colossal game selection (almost every popular game genre from the 80's is represented in spades), etc. My main complaint though is that the hardware is quite flawed unless you're willing to mod it quite a bit. The regular NES is incompatible with the FDS and has pins that get worn out pretty easily, the top loader NES is RF-only unless you mod it for composite, the Famicom is RF-only and has non-detachable controllers. Is there a setup that allows you to experience the full NES, FC, and FDS library that doesn't involve emulation?
Super Famicom/SNES - Another really great Nintendo system. It was actually one of the first home consoles that I owned for myself back when I got it in 2006. I was pretty late, but better late than never I guess. Anyways, a lot of the positives that I said about the NES apply to the SNES as well.
Sega Saturn - I have a hard time deciding whether the Genesis or Saturn is better. The latter I think very narrowly outshines the Genesis. Many great arcade ports as well as arcade-style games that went straight to console. A lot of cool-looking RPG's as well, but you'll need to learn Japanese if you want to delve more deeply into the Saturn's JRPG selection since only a few JRPG's got brought over outside Japan to begin with. The JPN controller is probably one of the best controllers out there ever.
Wii - Pretty much the first great Nintendo system since the SNES. I would say it was also the last great home console ever. Extremely fun and varied library of games if you can navigate past the shovelware, being able to use multiple types of controllers, easy to softmod, etc. It pretty much shits all over the 360 and PS3 in most ways except for the graphics. It was a shame that Nintendo just dropped it like a hot potato after 2011. Sure, there was also a lot of shovelware, but I would rather take the shovelware over Nintendo blocking games from coming over for petty reasons like what Sony did back in the PS2 days.
Runner-up:
Playstation - I like to think of this console as a beefed-up SNES and it's spiritual successor. Many games and series on the SNES made their way to the PS1 instead of the N64. A lot of people would say that the 3D games on the Playstation (and maybe Saturn) haven't aged very well, but I can't really agree. The polygonal graphics might be very dated, but a lot of the 3D games are still enjoyable to this day such as Spyro, Ape Escape, Ghost in the Shell, Ridge Racer Type 4, Ace Combat 2, etc. My main problem is that this system needs to have a modchip to play games from other regions (unless you wanna do that disc swap method everytime you want to play a game from another region.) I heard about the draconian policies that Sony did back in the PS1 days and aside from Mega Man X4, what other PS1 games were blocked by SCEA for one reason or another?
Playstation 2 - Has a giant library of games just like the PS1, but feels a bit weaker in some areas (mainly 2D platformers and 2D beat em' ups.) My biggest complaint is that the system is a giant pain in the ass to mod. It's unfortunate, because a lot of JPN-only games in the PS2 library look really appealing as well as the games that came out in Europe and Japan, but not North America. My biggest problem is that SCEA blocked quite a few games from coming to North America back in the day. Granted, that might've happened with the PS1 as well, but there's a lot more evidence to suggest that this happened in the PS2 days. When I found out about it, I pretty much stopped buying brand new Playstation stuff entirely. It wasn't even until earlier this year that I got another Playstation system (the PS3) and even then, it was used.

It's a really nice picture IMO. I would have thought the toploader NES was too.

It is very easy and very cheap to do: 3dscapture.com/fdsstick/Paired with a Famicom, you can play everything and experience all of the misc authentic audio upgrades.

Outside of PCE, my favorites are mostly in the 8 and 16-bit era with NES and SNES, I kind of missed the boat with Sega Genesis/CD even though I played it some, but didn't really come to appreciate Sega until the Saturn/Dreamcast era. Those would be my favorites. Well, those and NEO GEO, but I only ever dreamed of owning an AES growing up in the 'cades.

For me, it always comes back to four other systems: The NES, the SNES, the Sega Genesis, and the PS1. In some strange way, those four, along with the PCE, symbolize all that is good in gaming for me, and are my general go-to systems.
Damn straight. Ecco is awesome. One of my favorite Genesis games from childhood. Those insta-kill crusher blocks in Hard Water and Deep Water (Past) can suck it, though.

Truth is I love all consoles. Even the Jag, 3DO, and PC-FX. But if I had to choose I'd go with Super NES.

I like the Jaguar, most people hate the system. What's your favorite game on the system. The games I played the most as a teen were Wolfenstein 3D and Tempest 2000. Lately it's been bouts of Raiden though that game shipping without a rapid fire option was just loony.
