Since I finally bought a replacement DS (see other thread), I've been thinking a lot about what my favorite consoles and console "generations" were. Obviously, the Turbo/PCE occupies a big spot in my heart, but if I had to choose something other, I definitely think it would be the years where the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS were active. There was just such an wide breadth of games and game styles on both consoles, and developers were really experimenting with unique concepts. I think back to those consoles and some of my favorite games on them were the more niche ones: Katamari Damacy, Chulip, Red Star, WarioWare DIY, Hotel Dusk, Phoenix Wright, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, etc. I'd also lump the Dreamcast into this pile, because the tail end of the Dreamcast era really produced a number of unique and awesome games, leading right into the PS2/DS years. I had more fun discovering new games during this era than any other time I can remember. And I still go back to these games every so often just to experience them. What about you? What are your favorite non-NEC consoles?

Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo NES. Those three systems are the ones I have spent the most time with besides the PC Engine, and all have a large number of enjoyable titles I'm glad I got to experience.

I was a big supported of SEGA until the end of their hardware era. The Master System was my first console and opened my eyes to some playable and colourful titles, and allowed me to play SEGA's arcade games at home (it's really where I discovered Space Harrier). The Mega Drive was a leap forward, Golden Axe and Super Shinobi still being my favourite titles despite their early release. The Saturn was probably the last console I did serious importing for, mostly Treasure games like Silhouette Mirage and Radiant Silvergun. It also had the amazing Burning Rangers. The Dreamcast had some really original titles. It also was my first online gaming experience with Phantasy Star Online - very fond memories of this.

I loved Sega, too, but didn't truly appreciate them until the Dreamcast era. After that, I went back and got really into the Saturn. Did a lot of importing and have some really awesome games for it now. I love those two consoles.

Let's not forget Panzer Dragoon Saga and NiGHTS.

Loved NiGHTS, but never got to play Saga, sadly. I had my hands on it a couple times but could never pull the trigger.

Sega Master System remains the most thrilling and exciting console for me to play. Technically, the PC Engine is my favorite, even though I like the Genesis family as much. But there's something special about the Sega Master System aesthetics and design of many games that I've just come to accept will likely never be surpassed.
Intellivision is also one of my absolute favorites which stand apart from other consoles.

You could easily club someone to death with a Master System and it would still work afterwards.

Game Boy Advance (does backwards compatibility count as well?). The first console I had besides my dad's PS2, which grew my love for platformers with so many amazing games (Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Wario Land 4, Kirby's Adventure)
N64 gets a lot of flack, but it is my go to multiplayer system by far. Absolutely untouchable aside from call of duty and halo on the 360. Mario 64 and Majora's Mask are also in my top 10 games list.
Genesis is my favorite sega console. I've tried my best to get into the master system but then again, I'm not huge on the NES apart from all the megaman games.

Funny - I understand exactly what you mean about the Master System "aesthetic", like the Intellivision it is unique. - but I still just cannot enjoy it. Going on 30 years... Ys and Dragon's Trap - which I enjoy more on the TG.

I totally agree on the Master System and Intellivision being my favorite consoles beside the pce/tg16. Intellivision I dig for the unique approach these games had. You often have to pick up the manual and read it to get an idea on how to master the game, as there was a lot of thought put into making them far more complex than the average 2600 game. For no obvious reason, I also dig the Epoch Super Cassette Vision and the Gakken Compact Vision. Probably because they got next to no attention compared to the famicom.

I pretty much still live my life in the 8 and 16-bit eras. NES and Genesis are the other consoles in my "trifecta of love" along with Turbo/PCE. I'm also a big fan of gameboy and gameboy color. I've had a game gear that I've enjoyed since the mid 90's and that's also led me into a Master System romance.

The way I think of this question is this: which system would be the hardest for me to get rid of?
I’d say that would be SNES and N64. They have some of my favorite games as well as many new ones I want to play.
