Hiproblems with my japanese PCE (the white small version). The second I plug in a multitap the console shuts off, and the second I unplug the multitap it starts up again.
I have now tried with 4 different PCE:s and 3 different multitaps and have the same problem no matter what combination I test. I've tried both RGB and RF, same problem I've tried different power adapters, same problem
When I plug in a single controller instead of a multitap everything works fine.
It feels like the only thing I haven't tested is to change the game, because right now I only have one HU card unfortunately. While it feels kinda far fetched that it should be the HU card I don't really know what else I can test.
If you have any theory I would be most grateful
Best /Roger

Let me get this straight - you're saying that 4 different PCEs and 3 different multitaps - all 12 combinations of these yield the same results, as in the console shuts off ? What is plugged into the multitap(s) when you plug it into the PC Engine(s) ?
This sounds like an issue of exceeding the power limit (i.e. a short, or an overload to power), but that shouldn't happen if it's just the multitap plugged in - unless it's shorted internally. And while I might believe that one multitap is broken that way, it's hard to believe that all three are.
Sounds to me like you have a bad controller or device - the same bad controller or device - plugged in in each scenario. Remove devices until you either find that it's working, or you are just plugging in a multitap.

Hi I've tried plugging in the multitaps both with 1 controller, 2 controllers and 0 controllers. It all gives the same result. And I've tried all multitaps with all PCE:s. As you say, I find it hard to believe that all 3 multitaps are broken in the same way. It boggles my mind...

Do you have anything plugged into the rear expansion port of the PCE when testing?
This sounds so weird that every single setup has that issue.

Yes it's so strange. I don't have anything plugged in except the RGB cable/RF cable and the power. Even tried with different power outlets in my apartment if that might had anything to do with it. But nope, same problem

I see two possibilities:
1) Perhaps you are very near the power threshold as it is - maybe the power supply is flakey, maybe an internal modification is sapping some power, and the multitap puts it over the threshold. -> Not likely, but possible. It would be good to know whether you've tried multiple power supplies, and whether the machine has any modifications installed.
2) You may have a controller which destroys multitaps, and may have caused 3 of them to fail already. I'm not sure how this would happen, but if this is the case, you should be very careful about controller usage in the main unit.

What game are you testing it with? Are you sure it’s a power loss or is it the game is just not displaying? I’m sure I had an issue with Youkai Dochuuki not working when a multi-tap was plugged in. I might be wrong though as this was 30 years ago and both my PCE’s are not working to test it.

That’s a good point, I recall that game does have issues with multitap.

Hmmm, it's exactly Youkai Dochuuki I'm testing. What are the odds? 😲 Unfortunately it's the only Hu card I have right now.
I must get another hu card to test with asap. Thank you both dshadoff and fusoya for your answers, I will keep you posted!

Lo and behold, this specific game title was the culprit all along. Thank you very much for your help, case closed

I wonder if there's an easy fix for that game that could be released as a patch.

Yes, that sounds possible. But it won't help situations like the above, where the original HuCard is being used.
