So Stan Lee is gone at age 95. I know that people die, and 95 is a good age to go, and I don't normally comment on such things, but I feel like I should collect my thoughts a bit.
Because Stan Lee was very important to the world, in a way not many people realise. Yeah, he was a visionary, we know that. He invented countless amazing characters, different worlds, fantastic things. But as much as comic books were about these incredible exploits, they were also incredibly human. He created role models for people that needed them. Poor kids, black kids, gay kids, kids whose parents weren't around. He created characters, heroes that were just like us, with all our flaws. They gave kids something to aspire to, and told them it was ok to be themselves without judgement. Stan Lee told you that no matter how powerful you are, there are times in your life that you'll be completely powerless. That awful things happen to good people. But he also told us that we all have it in ourselves to raise ourselves up and be the best we can possibly be.
That was Stan Lee's gift to the world. He told us it's ok to be ourselves.
