If Barney the purple dinosaur was to be a character in a videogame, what genre would you make it ?
- a shooter ? (I think some people would want this, with the dinosaur as the target) - an RPG ? (Perhpas you would need to find lost children and give them hugs) - a fighter, like Godzilla (maybe Barney is a champion of the choke-hold… I mean ‘hug’, and perhaps instead of flames coming from his mouth, there could be projectile vomit…)
Just wanted to see how creative we could be.

A guy I know had a pretty good techno-house project in like…1993 maybe. He made a track called Majestic Barney, I think, which was an irreverent (perhaps violent) dig on the dino that was so popular at the time. It was a great track but we were super sick of it by the next year…which was 28 years ago.
Verdict: fresher subject matter needed. Nobody even remembers this stuff anymore.

I feel like I wouldn't make Barney the main character as much as a recurring antagonist. Maybe a Splatterhouse-inspired (visually, at least) platformer where the enemies are all different kinds of horrific creatures in Barney suits.

I would make jt a top down jrpg with rhythm game style combat, set in school and surrounding area, with math and education based puzzles in the dungeons to add variety to the exploration.

Considered how hated popular the purple dinosaur character is/was, it's just natural that many of these game ideas were already taken. For the three genres mentioned in the OP, I definitely had played a Doom mod shooting Barneys (Barneies?). In fact, thete's even a Wikipedia article listing some of these games. (Barney is playable in MUGEN, so the fighter route is taken, and appearing in ZZT clones can sort of say that it's in a RPG.) So, I think we ought to think of other uncommon genres, even then such games may already exist, so just think of crazy creative ways to incorporate the character in games. Just some food for brainstorming: - Rhythm game, in which the player presses the correct buttons at the correct time (or better, steps on the correct region of a dancing mat) to stomp the correct
organs parts of the evil poor dinosaur. - 'Sim' type game. Maybe creating a theme park featuring only clones of the purple dinosaur, and its derivatives (such as Rexney, Barcerotops, Rapney, with whatever randomly wrong spellings). Highlight: Disaster control with visitors being crushed by giant er... things or dying of heart attack after seeing too much purple.
- Strategy game a la Langrisser/Shinning Force/Fire Emblem/etc. Working title: Predators VS Barneys

This is true game design. Be sure to make all the songs so slow and bad that you can’t even detect the beat so it’s super difficult for all the nonfun reasons.

This is how we end up with theaters full of sequels and reboots…. You’ve proven that Barney has been done to death, before most people were even on the internet yet. I think abandoning that profoundly played out gag would be priority one.
