What's a PC Engine?

I've been playing through the first Wizardry game, and have been really impressed with the use its made of the PC Engine's hardware, it's easily the best version of the game I've ever played. I've hit a big of a snag though. I'm on level 4 and have gotten the Blue Ribbon, but the express elevator doesn't work. Whenever I press a button I get a message in Japanese telling me that nothing happened. In every other version of the game I've played the Blue Ribbon is the only thing you need to make use of the elevator. I've watched playthroughs on youtube, and in the two of them that have this part the elevator works as soon as the player can enter it (the Blue Ribbon lets you get past the door that leads into the elevator, you can't get to the buttons otherwise). Anyone have any ideas?

you've gotten further than me. I was playing for a while levelling up my characters when one switched alignment to good and now I cannot put them in a party with my future ninja (which has to have an alignment of evil). It seems like to get it to revert back to a neutral alignment it appears to be something that happens randomly so I just keep fighting random battles in the hope the game will do what I want.
Don't know if this will help but...
_________________ / 10. 4 Level 4 /_____________________________________________________________ -----------------
Although this level looks small at first given what limited access you have, it is actually a pretty big level. As usual, the monsters get tougher but that is minor compared to the real test you will have to complete on this level.
- Your characters need to be at least 11th or 12th level to complete this part of the quest. It is required that you go to the "Monster Allocation Center" 12E, 15N to do battle. Be forewarned, these monsters come from the lowest depths of the maze. You will encounter:
2 LEVEL 7 MAGES(3) 2 HIGH CLERICS (3) 2 LEVEL 7 FIGHTERS 1 HIGH NINJA
- The best solution is to take out the High Ninja and Mages first since they can do the most damage. Use your Cleric to silence the High Clerics. You should be able to clear out this room without any trouble. Follow the closets around to acquire the Blue Ribbon at 11E, 10N. This will allow you access to the elevator at 10E, 0N to enter the lowest depths of the dungeon.
- Although you cannot get to the rest of the level from here, you can use the teleporter traps on chests and MALOR to get around. In addition, you can access the rest of the level from the third level. Stairs up are located at 10E, 18N and the stairs down to the fifth level are located at 17E, 7N.
- In order to get through the door at 17E, 12&13N, you must have the Bear Statue.
- In the hallway in front of the "Monster Allocation Center", an alarm will constantly go off which means you will constantly have encounters. In addition, the two side rooms offer you the same opportunity. This is a good way to build up characters.

Did you know about the Inspect exploit? While in the maze if you press [Select] and choose Inspect (this is not the Inspect command you get by pressing button I) you can search for dead bodies from a wiped out party. However if you find someone alive, you can also add them to your party. So what you can do is take that good character, take them into the maze and then quit right away (Leave via the menu or do the PCE reset: hold down select and press start; or was it the other way around). Assemble the rest of the party, go down and inspect for them, and you'll find the missing party member. What's nice is that in the PCE version your can leave the maze with them and you won't lose them (I think the Famicom/Super Famicom version does that).
I'll check my items, I think I have all the key items though (Frog and Bear statue).... I'm wondering if it might be a minimum level issue, but it takes a lot of fights to get to Level 12....

Try Wizardry 3 and 4, the 4th one is hard, but they did some updates (like the ability to level monsters) to make it a little bit more bearable.
