Greetings, first post on this forums.
I just bought an RGB Modded PC Engine Duo Rx, looks gorgeous and I'm very excited!
I also have a 5 controller adapter and I'm waiting for Bomberman 94 to arrive soon. Right now I only have the standard 6 button controller (#1) that comes for the PC Engine Duo, will look into buying another one (#2) for playing Street Fighter 2 with friends, but to save costs I was wondering if I could buy 2 buton PC Engine controllers for controllers #3,#4 and #5, would I be sacrificing game play experience in some multiplayer games if I do that?

I'm not aware of any 3+ player games that require more than the standard 2-button pad to play, so you should be fine.

Yeah, there are no 6 button games more than two players that I know of. Six button games aren’t super common anyway. I play two button almost exclusively...I’ll break out SFII...maybe some of the Geo games, but usually it’s two button. Even games that do support the six button pad do it as a token measure (Super Real, Ys IV).
The RX pad isn’t one of the best PCE pads. The most popular 6 button pad is the Hori Commander, slightly second to that is the Avenue Pad 6. All the NEC two button pads are basically the same and very good. The white version seems to be very breakage prone but other than that they are all great.

Thank you for the kick reply. One thing that I've seen is that the Duo RX controller cable is as short as the Megadrive, are there good controllers with longer cables?

The RX controller's d-pad is too bad for street fighting games, but may be fine for sone 5-player titles.
The Ave Pad 6 and Hori FC are both good 6-button controllers, but personal preference will dictate whi h is better for you. I prefer the Ave Pad 6 but also keep a FC.
3-button controllers are just a gimmick and aren't necessary to play games which use Run as some dort of action.

They certainly aren't necessary, but I also wouldn't call them a gimmick. For the few titles where Run is indeed a common action function the 3-button pad does indeed make things more convenient. Like any non-stock controller, it's an issue of whether that convenience or improved access is worth money to you.

Yeah, I honestly find the three button pad to be more useful than the six button one. I have arcade PCBs so I rarely play ported fighters on a PCE and the non-fighting six button games are...aside from Ys IV and Super Real I&II I’m not remembering many, and those make such pointless use of the extra three buttons that I wouldn’t even bother to switch pads if they were both sitting in front of me.
The PCE, by and large, is a two button system. You’ll spend %99 of your time with a two button game so I’d emphasize the two button pad. At the moment, OP, you have only one of the worse pads made for the PCE.

In Valis III sliding isn't really common but it's also easy with a stock pad. As much as Genesis fans insist otherwise, three identical buttons lined up horizontally doesn't preserve the arcade gameplay in Forgotten Worlds. The arcade used a dial for rotating. In the 16-bit console ports, you end up resting a finger on counter clockwise and one on clockwise. The regular PCE pads actually line up three buttons better than the Ave Pad 3. If you're just flopping a thumb around no button layout will help. For this game it doesn't matter the potioning though, as your middke finger is always pressed down if auto fire isn't available and the rotating button fingers never move. If you actually compare the standard PCE Pad, Ave Pad 3, stock Sega 3 and 6 button pads (from any region), you can see how the Ave Pad 3 was designed poorly. It's not a standard pad with a third button next to II & II. It pushes II & I way up on the controller, but keeps them lined up together. Then button III is quite a bit lower, probably closer to the edge than standard pad buttons and it forms a hockey stick shape. The three buttons don't form an ergonomical curve unless you hold the pad at a 45 degree angle. Then Select and Run are moved way the hell over to the left, with Run now positioned at the centre of the pad and Select near the d-pad. If you've asigned III to the Run button, do you reach all the way over to the d-pad to use Select, careful not to bump your left thumb, or do you just slide your left on to it as needed? I can't think of any other games that people talkabout wanting an Ave Pad 3 for. You're right that all that matters is personal preference. But it's still too bad that both the Ave Pad 3 and 6 have their numeral buttons lined up the way they do. At least the Ave Pad 6 has Select and Run centred and the curved shaped helps to hold the pad crooked so you don't crank your wrist instead.

Yeah, I use whatever controller, it doesn't really matter! And cable extensions are great.
Also just came here to say, don't sleep on Moto Roader MC when it comes to 5p mode. it has a great one that most people don't seem to even know about!?
