The stylised HE on cases etc. What's that? Hudson Entertainment?

It's possible it come mean NEC "Home Electronics"
Hudson was "Hudson Soft" back in the day, but that would've bee my guess too!

I always thought it meant Highly Entertaining, or just some Engrish (cause the Japanese are cool that way) and called it a day.

I've always assuned that it was noting Hudson's ownership of the console hardware design, which NEC only manufactured. Same as HuCard being a trademark/copyright/whatever, instead of just labeling them generic "PC Engine Game".

Which incidentally (and I've mentioned before elsewhere) makes it weird for me that PC Engine fans feel an affinity for other NEC hardware. They're like... 10% of it? It's mainly Hudson

Yes and no. Hudson designed the core chips, but NEC helped develop those chips into a fully matured platform. They were also manufacturing partner and handled the US operations (badly). NEC was also a good development resource and did lots of ports from arcade titles. NEC was almost as strong a backer and supporter as Hudson was.

The PC Engine hardware and HuCards were both owned by Hudson and anyone licensing them paid Hudson. Konami received ownership of the PC Engine entity by buying Hudson. I haven't seen or heard anything about them licensing the PC Engine from NEC.
