After years of sorta understanding riichi mahjong well enough to get by in a game if I had to, 2020 was the year I finally learned most of the rules. I bought some tiles and the whole family plays now. When this happened all the sun faded ¥100 crap bin jong games in my collection got a second look. Now they are all..probably pretty fun, whereas they were unplayable crap 10 years ago. Its strange how one's perspective can change. Surprisingly though I have only one PC Engine mahjong title and its www.pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Jantei_Monogatari_2_Kanketsu.htm.
This is the second half of a game, apparently, like how Super Robot Wars games have been coming in two or more chapters with the same title a year apart from each other. This is essentially a digital comic where the fights are strip-style arcade two player mahjoing. You play a henshin metal hero type of guy who battles chicks who look like Yuna's frenemies. You have a few special powers and you can save up points to do crazy stuff like put you in tenpai for 9 gates and your first draw completes it. You save between battles, there are no other choices. The cinemas in this game are AAA with LOTS of voice acting and many many well drawn frames that often load in a pretty clunky way but if you're into PCE you won't mind. The game is a non-Super CD, the music is almost always PSG and then it streams in graphics and occasionally plays CD audio. Its all very impressive honestly. I would describe the difficulty as low. The cheesecake level here isn't extremely high, yellow label at most, I think Yuna 1 shows more.
So now that that's done I'm interested in any recommendations of other mahjong games on any system but especially PCE. I have two Super Real games coming. I'm not really into the girly stuff but its a quality series and these are late titles, one of which has the Acrade Card logo, so I wanted to see what they could do. I have the NGP version and its pretty good, technically pretty nice for NGP. I'm interested in more fantastic or scifi or comedy sorts of settings, gangsters and yakuza are great also. I know there are dozens of these games for PCE but I don't know much about any of them.
