I've never really been a big fan of strategy games like this, so it's only recently that I've really properly sat down to try and play through it.
I'm getting slaughtered on the third map. It's boiling my blood. I hate it.
Is there some tip or strategy to make winning these easier?

It's all about Zone of Control. You have to draw the enemy into getting surounded and avoiding it happening to your own units.
When there's a bottleneck on a map, you need to be patient and exploit it.
Before you make your first move on a map, familiarize yourself with the factory locations. You need to have an ongoing plan for rea pairing units, but especially the key ones that you will have few or any one of.

Thanks. I managed to just beat map 3 by trying to gang up around the enemy, or at least grouping my tanks together.
We'll see how long I can last on the next one before throwing my Mini out the window.

Even though there's some RNG involved and sometimes more than one potential solution, it helps to view the maps like puzzles, where there's one or two preferred strategies that will get you through even if the RNG is a bear. In later, longer maps, zone of control, terrain bonuses, and unit experience will really start to make a big difference.

By surrounding the enemy they mean just placing two units on opposite sides of an enemy. When I first heard "surround the enemy" I thought I literally had to surround my enemy with tanks.
You don't.
It helps to keep your units together as they get defensive bonuses from each other.
Also a pro tip--once you get the units (the buggies) that can move after attacking you can place them in a nearby shuttle, preventing them from taking damage on the next wave. Just make sure there are no enemies that can attack air nearby!

These are good strategies! I always get slaughtered by the 3rd map as well, and have tried to understand the complexities of attack bonuses by surrounding enemy units. The in-game manual is hugely beneficial but after a little while my brain shuts down. These days typically I just play a few rounds to hear its spacey soundtrack.
