Suh FPGAs exist, but are out of reach for average people due to reasons of cost. Intel/Altera (or Xilinx for that reason) has no particular desire to drive down prices, but some competitors like Lattice (and Chinese Gowin) are selling more and more capable FPGAs at lower price points - ultimately causing downward pressure on the big boys.
I really feel like FPGAs are starting to break into mainstream use, which will cause prices to drop - but it will still be years before the next generation of product 'gels' into a platform which developers will gather around. And yet, there's still life in the current generation so don't write it off yet.

Oh, you're on the fence about buying... I forgot to mention that the DE10-Nano board which MiSTer is based on, is (from what I hear) a fairly heavily-subsidized board as it is intended for educational purposes: Something like $300US worth of parts on a $130US board, if you believe what that person told me.
Which is fine... no idea if/when they might remove that subsidy, or adjust pricing of parts. The other wild card is the American export ban on "dual-use" products which includes FPGAs -> so China will not be able to receive the parts to assemble the boards anymore... which may cause an increase in overall prices, or a blip in supply.
Just something to think about if you're on the fence.

Well, I jumped on board the MiSTer train. Got the FPGA, analog IO board, and SDRAM module coming, along with a power splitter/switch in case I decide to upgrade to the USB board, and because I was cheap this time, a passive USB hub that should be good enough for controllers/keyboard. Looking forward to sampling these cores for sure.
