Created this thread because of a conversation that popped up in another thread.
like in between us arguing like idiots on discord I think we were talking about games and crap like normal people.
but yeah.. starting small is always useful. Insanity was pretty small and obtainable. It just looks like shit because me and art are not friends.
At one point the floors were black with teal. I should've left that I think.
Atlantean looks awesome! You should proud of it. Did you have help with it?
I'll have to pick it up (the rom) when the mini gets hacked down the road.
For Insanity: I've never played Robotron, but watching YouTube videos of it, I would have gotten rid of the blue walls, which would seem to get in the way of the gameplay as the action picks up (you would just need to make the character and enemies move faster), and gone with a minimalist look. The best arcade games have a rush or hyperintensity to them; giving the player the option of hiding between walls for cover or wait for enemies to round the corner would go against that core design. Though I like the background (the slighter colored exposed circuits) I would worry it would get in the way of seeing enemies attacks once the screen gets cluttered.
I had pockets of help from some MSX developers and TheOldMan when I needed some advice or hit weird snags. Most notably, I went to MSX for advice on how they would handle circular movement, and I ended up writing a C utility to generate a table of sine values..
and they helped catch a sign extension issue when I had fixed point working, but it came from z80 code, so the sign extension crap on 6502 bit me. It bit them too for a bit.
and screen wrapping/sprite popon issues when dealing with sprites entering the screen from the left. Goofy little annoying things. Lots of interesting conversations came out of those things.
For Insanity though: It's a clone of Berzerk, not Robotron:

This still remains one of my favorite arcade games. The walls actually kill you if you touch them. and the enemies die from them too.

lol yeah I guess the interesting thing is I generally don't hate people enough to not help or talk to them unless they do something legitimately awful, or fuck me over.
