Personally, I always thought it would have been cool for Hudson to release a SuperGrafx port of R-Type, maybe even as a launch title. They could have eliminated the flicker (mostly), restored the multiplane backgrounds from the arcade version, and sold the entire game as one Hucard instead of two. Yep, I totally agree! A no-flicker, arcade perfect R-Type would have shown the power of the SGX, and IMHO just absolutely flown of off the shelves. This is getting on in age, but I actually started a PCE->SGX conversion hack for R-Type back in 2011, but I got sidetracked with family matters... Each level needs to be hacked individually, as each background split / sprite interaction with scrolling/split backgrounds is custom for each stage... Anyway an example of PCE->SGX: Oh WOW! I'll hope-n-dream that you decide to continue on with that project some day, and finish off at-least one level so that SGX-owners can see what-could-have-been

Chris, I'm getting Trojan warnings by the Malwarebytes I have on my PC anytime anything that's linked in from your site is posted here, like your above pic for instance. I get the same warning when I go directly to your website as well.

Is there no way with you being the site owner that you can rectify that? I've never owned a site before so I have no experience with such matters. I really miss browsing your site.

Well, my friend owns/manages my site (it was a birthday present from way back ;D ) and he's looking into getting the blacklist removed.
My site is working fine; should have NO malware. It's just that its reputation got damaged when the domain/server got hacked/suspended. That takes time to clear up...?

I'll try to put in an exception into MB to keep it quiet about cc.com. I wasn't trying to come across as mean back there honest. My wife was having me talk her through a problem on her PC as I was writing my comments so I was distracted heh. That's awesome you received your site as a birthday present! That must've been ages ago as I've always had your site bookmarked. Kinda like an old comfortable shoe.

I have a feeling 256 pixel width was the "standard" on the PC-Engine because it is the resolution that matched up with the PCE's horizontal sprite-per-line limit (the limit that causes flicker when exceeded). Having the horizontal resolution the same as the sprite-per-line limit ensures that you can really fill up the screen horizontally with sprites and not have to worry about flicker too much. If you'll notice, most of the games that use the PCE's middle ~336 pixel width tend to have a bit more flicker than other games (R-Type, Ninja Spirit, etc.). Irem seemed to be a big fan of using the the PCE's middle resolution

Ninja Spirit, for me, has always been one of the games that first comes to mind when I think of flicker on PCE. WHO AM I KIDDING? R-TYPE vies for the top spot.

It's always been said that Hudson Soft coded R-Type in-house, but with this fact now presented maybe Irem got their hands a little dirty too with that port as well as those crazy busy bees? Interesting thought though for sure.

From this list at least, all the games developed or published by Hudson (except R-Type I and II) had imposed restrictions on sprites. Iwasaki was heavily involved in the development of Ys I+II and Daimakaimura (which was actually developed by Hudson, but published by NEC Avenue for some reasons) and from that blog entry about R-Type he had mentioned while Ys I+II was in development the programmers asked again whether the limitation could be lifted, and NEC replied "no". And it honestly makes no sense, since games before and around the same time have 1 cycle pixel access in mid-res mode. Maybe Ys I&II was in development for a quite some time? Great thread btw!

I'm too lazy to check at the moment, but in Iwasaki's blog there are some concise info on the development of Ys I+II (with time frame mentioned), like how hard it's for Hudson to convince Falcom for the license (because... Faxanadu) and how he secured some of the members of the team (like having the same artist from the original games to work on the PCE port) and why some changes/cut were made to the game.

If you are referring to the one about Ys being forced to use the 2-cycle timing, it's near the end of the entry about R-Type I originally posted here (since the blog was moved I'll put the new link here, though the original one still works). Quoted and roughly translated below: If you're talking about the development history of PCE Ys I+II, it's actually a whole series of entries, which were then compiled into a book and sold, with a sample PDF available here (it's the first book in the list).

Hmmmm ... I wonder if it's worth trying to get the new Turbo Everdrive OS to actually patch the US R-Type HuCard and possibly even the R-Type CD, and switch them to 1-cycle mode so that they support the same number of sprites-per-line as the Japanese R-type HuCards?

I can't say that it would be worth any one person's effort, but it would really be appreciated by fans as it should make a noticeable difference in flicker reduction to the average player.
