the odd thing about this is: the pce is barely "mini" at all, it's almost the size of a real one
meanwhile the turbo is like only 20% smaller and is still huge. why!!

I will probably be in the minority, but I don't think nostalgia should play a role in this mini release, at least in the US. After all, how many gamers actually owned one during its prime, and would want one of these consoles now? Therefore, if I was Konami, I would do something similar to what they are doing with the Coregrafx in PAL regions, and just either release the PCE version in the US or release a version shaped like a PCE, but with all the TG16 branding. None of that silly TG16 dead space and ugliness relative to one of the most attractive consoles ever in the PCE.
This is the time to finally correct the mistakes NEC made back in the day.
In regards to the games, I hope they delve into the import market, to include obvious stuff like Rondo, but also more esoteric entries like Nexzr, as well as expensive and rare stuff like Sapphire.

On Japanese site 4gamer Konami has said they're considering releasing limited runs of the other models for the different regions.
Though I like the TG16 design I can understand people thinking it ugly.

I don't think the TG16 is ugly. I just think that relative to the PCE, it is. But then, I think the PCE and Coregrafxs are the sexiest consoles ever, so pretty much everything is. I also think that if Konami were to release the PCE or the like versions here, it will sell better than the TG16 shell, as the latter will sell nostalgia to a very miniscule audience.
The PCE was sexy back in the 80s and 90s, and it's even more so today. I can see this arousing interest from a lot of gamers who will just be attracted by the design itself.

I disagree. It might be era/location specific but my nostalgia for TG16 is the main driving factor for my love of the system. I'm sure there are others like you, especially in this message board. I just think that to the general public, which is the bigger audience, the PCE is probably more appealing and much more iconic.
At the end, it might be a moot point, if Konami does release all shells in the US. And moot doubly for me, as unless this thing includes SGX games or some long lost proto that can't be played in original hardware, I will really have no reason foe buying it.

They're not producing a functional device, they're catering to collectors who will gladly buy one or two of each model, but still do not own an actual PC Engine because rhey refuse to a fraction of that price for one. If these do well, we'll likely see new versions with SuperGrafx, Duo and misc shells. It's a neat novelty, but the only mini console I plan to buy is the Japanese Mega Drive version, in order to support the publishing of new homebrewed ports. If that system does well, hopefully Mark III Musha will be on the next release. There aren't really any expensive PCE games. They all retailed for comparable prices. Collectors only pay a premium for the 25 year old physical package. You can play every game for free now and games like Sapphire have been available as a budget rerelease for at least as long as the gap beteeen the PCE and PSP versions' releases. I'd rather the libraries on these things just contain great or fun games than games recognized more for nostalgia or original media collectible pricing. If you're interested in playing Nexzr, you should seek out Summer Carnival '93. Even as an original copy it's valued for less, it contains the full game of Nexzr plus adds scoring/time attacks mode(s). If the PC Engine minis get any kind of worthwhile exclusive content, I'll gladly buy one or more models. Hopefully Konami will take a cue from Sega and license Bubble Bobble from Taito and pay Aladar to finish his port. Those unreleased Taito ports that a programmer was trying to sell for a while would be nice as well. We now know that Taito is onboard for it.

The latter was probably cancelled for a reason. If it's former it would probably be easier to start from scratch. Besides any new Bonk game should look like a Turbografx game, not ugly polygons. Shudders* (though they should cheat with the transformations when Bonk eats meat a la Bloodstained Curse of the Moon).

I get it that it's not a functional device and that it's a novelty. I am strictly speaking from a business sense and what I think would make this succeed, since I reckon the majority of collectors and casual gamers with an interest in classic games, that would be interested in something like this, would have their wallet piqued more by something that looks cute, since nostalgia will not factor as much as if it was a Nintendo device. The PCE is attractive, its iconic and its a bit mysterious to the uninitiated. If they release all shells, then obviously a moot point, and might even make more sense, since we know there will be some double/triple dipping. I would also love if Konami includes some homebrew or completed formerly lost proto, and that would actually make me be interested in this. Likewise if they include the handful of SGX games. As it stands, I already have Rondo, Nexzr, a Sapphire CDR, and pretty much everything I want to play in its original hardware. So basically, I have no need for this. My Coregrafx is already cute as a button, and I can insert those lovely Hucards as well, so I'm set!

I dont see how this would cater to collectors outside of nostalgia. Isn't there better ways to emulate everything than this will provide, and isn't the the value in collectables come from popularity and rarity?
I am confused by the idea of this catering to someone who isn't trying to relive the look and feel without the baggage emulation configuration and cost of original items.

Someone on another forums posted a list of the games that were listed on the USA eshop so who knows if these will appear on the western markets. Thanks to Lupin.
This is a list of all Wii/Wii U TG-16 Virtual Console games released in North America.
More of these were released on Wii (63) than Wii U (40), but a few were Wii U-exclusive, and I've noted them. Some have since been delisted, I've left notes about those since they might or might not affect current availability.
The Irem stuff was once delisted but got relisted a few years later, so they're not marked.
Air Zonk Alien Crush Battle Chopper (Wii U only) Battle Lode Runner Blazing Lazers Bloody Wolf (delisted on March 1, 2012) Bomberman '93 Bomberman '94 Bomberman: Panic Bomber (Wii U only) Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure Bonk's Adventure Bonk's Revenge Bravoman Break In Castlevania: Rondo of Blood Chase H.Q. Chew Man Fu China Warrior Cho Aniki Cratermaze Dead Moon Detana!! TwinBee Devil's Crush Digital Champ: Battle Boxing Double Dungeons Dragon Spirit Dragon's Curse Drop Off (delisted on March 1, 2012) Dungeon Explorer Fighting Street Final Soldier Galaga '90 Gate of Thunder Gradius (Wii U only) Gradius II: Gofer no Yabou Image Fight (Wii U only) Image Fight II (Wii U only) J.J. & Jeff Legend of Hero Tonma Lords of Thunder Military Madness Monster Lair Moto Roader Necromancer (Wii U only) Neutopia Neutopia II New Adventure Island Ninja Spirit Ordyne Power Golf Psychosis R-Type Riot Zone Salamander (Wii U only) (same basic game as NES Life Force) Samurai Ghost Shockman Silent Debuggers (delisted on March 1, 2012) SimEarth: The Living Planet (delisted in July 2017) Soldier Blade Splatterhouse Star Parodier (delisted in March 2014) Street Fighter II: Champion Edition Super Air Zonk: Rockabilly-Paradise Super Star Soldier The Dynastic Hero Victory Run Vigilante World Class Baseball World Sports Competition Ys Book I & II

I am confused by the idea of this catering to someone who isn't trying to relive the look and feel without the baggage emulation configuration and cost of original items. I disagree. I think there are collectors who probably never had the og growing up and have an interest in the system's games, but don't want to delve into self served emulation or the expense of original hardware. Others might just be looking for a way to play these games in modern TVs in the most convenient way possible. Others might be looking at it like a cool toy to add to their gaming rooms. The nostalgia folks are going to be a very small subset of a very small audience to begin with, at least in the US. Just because you fall into the latter, doesn't mean it is the ONLY reason somebody will pick this up. Again, if they release all shells here, its a moot point. And in the end, it doesn't really matter to me that much - just thinking from a business sense what is more logical and more appealing to the widest consumer base possible, considering the seemingly small audience something like this will have in the USA, if only driven by nostalgia alone.
