Apart from the WHAT RPG, the Splatterhouse Chrome game did also have a physical release as HuCARD. Aside from the quality of the "manufacturing", if this counts then so do PCEWorks bootlegs. It's cool to list them, but they should have a separate section. I would say this is where the lines become blurry with what is a "hack" vs. what is a homebrew. The ports of HuZero and Downland are listed, which are, in a sense, ports of other consoles. Yet, Mega Man 2, Ducktales, WhatRPG, and Splatterhouse Chrome aren't. It IS confusing and I'm sure whatever you guys decide is fine, but don't downgrade the efforts by TurboKon/Braap on the Splatterhouse Chrome and other efforts by saying it's basically "A Tobias" deal. PCE Works did direct ports, Turbo Reproductions' versions of Splatterhouse Chrome is at least an original hack of the game.

PCEWorks published the Drac X, SO2 and Xak III translations, an early version of Tom's CD version of Megaman and hired someone to hack out many unique games which were contained within other games, hack some HuCard games to run on CD and customized at least Godzilla.
Don't forget that Turbokon's collaboration with Tobias produced all round professional quality bootlegs of Splatterhouse and Magical Chase.

I don't see Nantettatte Engine on there unless I am blind.

It's a from scratch doodly doowop demo thing. I think hacks should be in a separate thread, though. They're not the same as from-scratch games, and that scene is sort of different in general. Separating them makes sense.

HuZero isn't a port of anything. F-Zero LEFT <-------> Hu-Zero RIGHT Come on man, what kind of clown car you arrive in?

HuZero isn't a port of anything. F-Zero LEFT <-------> Hu-Zero RIGHT Come on man, what kind of clown car you arrive in? I'm in a clown car that knows what a port is. Lifting graphics and creating a tech demoish game exhibiting the effects and aesthetics from F-Zero is not a port. Port implies you are taking the code from F-Zero and moving it to another platform, which I do not think is what Covell did. I was under the impression he did this from scratch, especially since the PCE doesn't even have the same Mode7 capabilities, so it probably needed to be done differently.

It's just a mini-game using F-Zero graphics, so it's kinda a thing unto itself.

So, it's a totally original game with totally original code that attempts to emulate the capabilities of another console using sprites and music of a popular game from that console. I think that's the definition of a port. It's just a mini-game using F-Zero graphics, so it's kinda a thing unto itself. It's kind of a port too.

I think that's the definition of a port. No, that's not the definition of a port, lol. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PortingPorting generally requires use of the original code when moving from platform to platform. If the underlying CPU isn't the same, you get to convert it. It's for when you're trying to do the same game with the same title, and same general gameplay even if it ends up being a watered down mess that sucks because you're on a team of pudnuts that suck at the game you're trying to convert. Eyeballing recreations and techdemo-y little mini games are not the same thing as a port. If HuZero was meant to be a port of F-Zero, it failed completely because it doesn't control the same nor does it play the same. The effect is also not 100% the same (IIRC, there aren't full rotations). Insanity is not a port of Berzerk. Atlantean is not a port of Defender. Sorry you've been using a word wrong for probably 20+ years now.

On a side note, how the fuck did he do that port/not port? It's really impressive.

So, I'm curious tho, if HuZero is considered an original homebrew then wouldn't "WHAT RPG" as well? It does use the same sprites from Phantasy Star, but it was rewritten with different story n' stuff right? Wouldn't that be the same thing?

As far as I'm aware it was unfinsihed? Or at least appeared that way. If I'm incorrect let me know a page I can link to that has a final version. I also added Megaman but again, would appreciate a link.

Yeah, WHAT RPG isn't a port either. It's a fan RPG amalgamation or something or other.
Using the same art doesn't make something a port.
