Gambler Jiko Chuushinha: Mahjong Puzzle Collection is a great puzzle game that’s rarely mentioned.
It’s not a mahjong game or even a puzzle collection but is actually a game of pairs using Mahjong tiles. However there is a twist... In order to pair off two selected identical tiles they must either be directly adjacent to each other OR be linkable together by a line. This line between two tiles can change direction around other tiles up to a maximum number of TWO times in order to trace between the two matching tiles (so this includes around the edge of the board).
I’d say it’s more similar to the game Shanghai rather than Mahjong.
The menu provides a difficulty option with the numbers on the right indicating how much time you want to give yourself in each game. The option where there is no number is the one for unlimited time (ideal for beginners). When the game starts you have a set number of ‘hints’ that the computer will give you when you press select. You can increase the amount of hints you have by pairing off a certain type of tile. Other tiles paired off give you extra time. You can also gain bonus points by not pairing off any tiles that match the random tile indicated in the bottom right corner.
It’s a great little addictive puzzle game and once you learn how it works you will be clearing the board in no time. The CD quality music is great and very catchy too.

Zipang. I think the cover throws a lot of people off. It is a fantastic and fun puzzle game. Like majors mentioned though I'm sure most regular to the pc-engine know of Zipang. I don't typically hear it being talked about though. Zipang is a reskin of Tecmo's Solomon's Key! If anyone is a big fan they should try Zipang for sure. Some games I like that few seem to mention Override River City Ransom (all the kunio games in general) Tenchi Wo Kurau (Capcom) W-Ring Double rings Gain Ground Force Gear (caravan Konami) Hany on the Road Skweek is great if you grew up with European computers

Interestingly, many of these seem to be puzzle games. My first thought was another puzzle game: Boxyboy.
Maybe we just don't talk about puzzle games the same way we do with shooters or platformers because what makes a good puzzle game is less universal. If you like the particular puzzle game's hook, you'll love playing it, but if you don't connect to it, you'll quickly move on to something else.
Simplistically, both Tetris and Blodia/Timeball involve moving blocks around with a timer influencing your position. Both are legendary: one for being one of the greatest games ever made, and one for being the least fun game on the TurboGrafx.
(No, I haven't played Drop Off, Deep Blue, or Darkwing Duck.)

You guys do know that the giant, unblinking eye of eBay is watching this thread so closely for "hidden gems" that its retina is literally being pressed up against a computer monitor right?! * tee hee *
^^The mental picture of that made me laugh.
Null, I kinda figured you would've picked Silent Debuggers.

Two amazing games! Mr. Heli is a fantastic arcade port. Splash Lake is one of those puzzle games I can always come back and play. Tons of fun. Been a while since I've done a clear of it.

With very few exceptions I've pretty much acquired all the games on the platform that I want to experience, but I never really put Splash Lake on my radar. Maybe I'll start searching for a copy. I like games of that type more than I used to.

DAT HAZW: I can't ever get to far in SPIN PAIR, and i feel like i must be missing some really obvious strategy to the game. But, for a long time, I have felt that this game is "cozy" and feels good. Terra Cresta II - what a great game. I believe that it was designed with the intention of SWITCHING SPEED as a fun element to play with. Or, maybe it's just the fact that i love shifting speed in vertical shootemups. Anyway, Terra Cresta II is a game where constnatly switching speeds (both as an experiment as well as a strategy) pays off constantly. I need to spend more time with this game. Gomola Speed - I am sick of bringing this up. I am beating a dead horse at this point. 'nuff said Mesopotamia/Somer Assault - same as Gomola Speed. 'nuff said. Timeball/Blodia - ignore the bastard* who talked shite about this game. 'nuff said. *At least tell me you like one of the songs from Blodia?
Armed F Formation F Armed - it's not a gem, but rather harsh, yet I still enjoy it for some reason. WARNING: I am a sucker for all shootemups. People will be underwhelmed. That's why it is segregated in its own section.

Yes, the first song in Blodia is pretty good, but it's the only redeeming feature I could find.

I had forgotten about Terra Cresta II. Many scoff at it as an overpriced underachiever, but I feel it's a great little shewtie with nice tunes and visuals. Jodi sent me a bootleg of the game that he made himself for Christmas a few years ago and I always enjoy giving it a spin.
