From time to to time I toy with the idea of sharing a breakdown of the making of a translation patch. I tried this years ago on Romhacking.net, where people are constantly asking for "how do I do it ?", but I was criticized because the breakdown necessarily takes many posts, and I received criticism that (a) I was simply trying to increase my post count (though why I should care about that, I don't know), and (b) that the board itself had limitations on how many posts it could handle, and I was consuming critical resources. So I stopped. This community seems much more even-tempered. But it's a commitment of a bunch of time and effort, so if it's not something that people really want to see, I won't bother. Please cast your vote. Dave

I would love a tutorial! It'll give me a reason to finally start working on one!
Will this be general knowledge only, or will there be PCE specific stuff eventually?

My thoughts were that there will be an overall structure including: - introduction (general), such as how to choose a project and some basic tools information - overview of process including extracting the text and locating pointers - importance of how to handle the text between programmer and translator (and version control) - reinsertion and challenges - testing - going back for graphics (or not) - going back for sound (or not) Basically the above would give a person a view of the size of a project (and how to estimate relative size of a particular game)
And I was planning on sharing my work on at least Dead of the Brain: - script identification process & extraction tools (including code and walkthrough of my process) - how I have chosen to store the text - locating the print routine and patching it - reinsertion process - any challenges I encounter and their solutions
...more or less. I don't want it to be just a monologue, so more time will be spent on what people ask about.
I suppose based on what I had in mind, it sounds more like a series of threads - i.e. post major topic, then discussion... separate topic = separate thread.

I think it's a great idea, and I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge/resources.

Not only is this a great idea, I think at the conclusion you should consider organizing (or allowing someone else to organize) the posts into a singular article/reference. I can think of a couple places that might be willing to host such a thing.

I'd be interested, though I can't read any Japanese.
Actually, that didn't stop the guy who translated Monkey 🤔 I suppose there's the chance I could create a hilarious "translation" where I completely subvert the original plot.
I've always been kind of interested in doing some voice acting. I think I'd be a good actor, but I have no interest in being famous, or performing in front of anyone.

The PC Engine translation scene is crying out to be worked on properly so thank you Dave for offering your time out to help others and maybe it will give it a kickstart. Sorry to hear you had such a negative response over at Romhacking. Anyway I think it’s a fantastic idea, I’m very interested and would really appreciate your efforts.

This is a great idea. I'd never have the technical ability to do one, but it might inspire those who do.

I would love to get even a surface level overview, thank you for offering!

I'd love to see this! It would be fun to compare how our approaches differ, and see what I can learn from you to make the process easier the next time.

Well, this is a much better response than I thought ! (I didn't even know that over 20 people watch the tech parts of the board...)
I'll start writing the "intro/tools/project" overview stuff first, and post it as soon as I can. I will probably post the print function next after that, while I clean up the script extractor.
