In my actual game set up it was Keith Courage, lol. However what got me hooked was the commercials during "Video Power". I distinctly remember Ninja Spirit and Legendary Axe looking SO AMAZINGLY badass!! I wanted to throw my Tandy CoCo out a window and get that ASAP!! You did remember? I'm still paying off that hospital bill due to blunt force trauma.

Late reply, but my first PC-Engine game was GunHed. My best friend had imported a PCE-White model to Europe around 1988-89 and GunHed was the first game we got to play. We were both working on our own Shoot-em Up game for the Amiga 500 at the time and we were blown away by the amount of stuff this little white box could put on the screen. And all that from a cartridge the size of a fat credit card. Amazing! It wasn't until 2003 or so that I ended up buying my very own set of PC Engine Whites, a Duo, a TurboGrafX 16, a SuperGrafX, a few GT's and a few years later, even a boxed LT. And of course lots and lots of games. Then about 4-5 years ago I foolishly decided to sell a significant portion of it all. What an idiot!! Still working on repairing the damage.

I don't remember at all what the first game I saw was. I know I saw ads before I saw the system itself, but I suspect Blazing Lazers was the title that really caught my attention first and convinced me to save up my money to buy one back in the day. It was great (or so I thought) when the price first dropped to $99. I picked up a TG with Keith Courage at Toys R Us (RIP).

I missed the TG-16/Duo completely, but the first game I saw running on real hardware was Dracula X when I bought a system a few years ago. I'd emulated games before that, though, with Magic Engine.
The biggest thing I remember, though, was that issue of GameFan I had that covered several Duo games in it. That issue had Dungeon Explorer II, which looked amazing, as well as Fiend Hunter and Double Dragon II. I distinctly remember them ragging on DD2, which killed me as a Double Dragon fan. Now that I've played it, though, I think the NES game is superior, so maybe they were right...

Double Dragon II is such a blast. I loved it. It's such a slick hybrid between the NES and Arcade versions. The music is weird, though.
Also, Dungeon Explorer II is a game a lot of people love, but I actually prefer the original. It's good, but it's not quite as pick up and go friendly awesome as the first title. It's another one of those games that Atlus developed first and then Hudson took over the sequel and changed the engine just enough that it feels a tad off.

At some point I'm going to dive into the first DE. It's definitely on my list. I didn't pick up on the engine being "off" because, well, I didn't start with it, haha. It's one of the first games I played through when I got my Duo. I do see why folks might like DD2 on Duo, but I actually kinda miss the platforming elements. And losing that amazing soundtrack was a blow. I'd have loved to hear a remixed version of those tunes in the Duo game instead. Heck, that by itself would probably have improved my opinion drastically.

super star soldier at birmingham's microbytes within the old bull ring shopping centre around 1990, my jaw dropped when i see how good visually looked, but as it was an imported pc engine, prohibitive expensive at around 250 pounds for the console and 50 pounds for the game

I had never seen a game running before I bought my TG16; I had only seen ads in magazines. That was enough to make me want one. Pretty sure this was me...or at least close, prob saw a commercial maybe.

I think it may have been Vigilante. I know the first thing running on the Turbo CD I ever saw was the sampler CD+G.
Despite this, I saw the potential. I saw the screenshots of Ys and Cosmic Fantasy and I bought a Duo.

I think I saw Bikkuriman World first, but I had never heard of the game at the time. I was lucky to see a lot of the games when they were initially released because the toy/game stores I visited always had multiple games on display and even had stations set up to try out games.
I'd say the first games I saw running that made a big impression were R-Type, Kato and Ken, Victory Run, and Dragon Spirit.
