Everyone's favourite PC Engine RPG(s) Ys I and II. I don't actually know why they were released together (were they ever released separately?), but they were, and look at them go. They appeared at a time when RPGs were still feeling themselves out, so it feels like a mix of other RPG styles to me - the overland maps are a mix between Zelda and Final Fantasy, with a slight lean towards the former in terms of action. But I was never a fan of the bump into stuff to kill it vibe, it seems a little... skill-less. Still, action was never Ys's strong point, it's more to do with story and pacing of the game. I didn't actually get into Ys much myself because I didn't like the action component, but I probably should go back. The game also features some fine music and voice acting (!) as well as those ridiculous Falcom borders.
Forgotten Worlds is a Capcom Arcade version, and a very good one. You feature as one member of 80's UK boyband, Bros, who can inexplicably fly through the air firing lasers through a length of PVC. The first thing to note is that it's a really close conversion, graphically. The Megadrive version, while no slouch, definitely isn't as well presented. The second thing, is the controls. The game came bundled with a three button controller as a "big box" version, and the idea is that you use one button to rotate clockwise, another to rotate anti-clockwise, and the last to fire (I don't know how it works on a two button pad, but presumably not as well). The game was also one of five compatible with the Micomsoft XE-1 AJ Intelligent Controller via the X-HE3 - a full-on analogue flight stick.* The game itself is a decent shooter, and it features one of my favourite things - an in-game shop. I could write at length upon how good in-game shops are (properly implemented). The game is graphically superb, and the title also features a choice between original and remastered sampled speech. But you're probably not even reading this because you've already voted for Ys.
*And I've just found out that PCEngine.co.uk has a hidden section featuring every PC Engine compatible controller - here:
