On a system not known for quality beat'em ups, this is one of the "8-bit" best! Crash and bash all the boys in the high school yard, with meticulously updated 16-bit graphics and quality Redbook arrangements, with the same classic gameplay intact from the NES version.
Note: Japanese only but can be played with a Famicom specific guide or general knowledge of the original game. pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Downtown.htm

Hmm, I own Street Gangs (Pal version on the NES) so I might cheat a bit and play that one...

this game requires a huge chunk of free space for it's save file before it will load. I like it but I wish they could have added layered scrolling, larger and more sprites appearing on the screen.

Since I have a working EverDrive again I am going to try to participate in these GoTM's now, and this seems like a great one to jump in on. Do I need to know anything going in? I've never played the NES version, and cannot read moon runes

Watching a bit of a playthrough of the NES version or reading a guide should be more than enough.

This is a game that I always wanted to play in English. I enjoyed the NES version immensely growing up: it was like a crazy cross between Double Dragon and Metroid. The game is vibrant and colorful on the PC Engine. It looks fantastic and the soundtrack is pretty catchy too. My one real complaint about the game is the sound effects being a bit overbearing compared to the background music.
I'm familiar enough with the game that the last time I played the PC Engine version I was able to, eventually, figure out where to go and what to do. I never did own the game though. It's been a bit price-y forever so I haven't ever made the plunge to actually buy the game.

Having never played the NES game I had a really hard time getting into the game when I tried it. No story context, or idea what any of the menus might be doing, has been a struggle for me. I play very few games that weren't translated, so it's been tough for me. I haven't looked a guide up yet, I had only burned the game and tested it out. Everything worked fine but for some reason my audio was having issues. Technical and lingual hurdles prevented some of the enjoyment, but the control and graphics are great and I look forward to trying again after figuring out my audio issue (it's with my setup, not my system or game), and will be reading some guides before I go back in.
Does anyone suggest a guide besides gamefaqs? Did everyone beat it? Luke sent me a playthrough estimate website saying this could feasibly beat within 3 hours, so I hope to do that this week before I ship my duo-r off for some repairs and mods.

I absolutely adore this port. I love the CD music that Naxat wrote for it and the updated colours and gameplay is identical to the original. Kunio!!
