For those who don't know, the Spectrum Next is a successfully crowdfunded project to release an updated version of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum home computer. It's fully compatible with existing Speccy software and 99% of hardware, but also adds a bunch of extras for current and future devs. People are really getting behind this machine in a big way.
It's getting close to completion now and there's already a game released and others coming out soon.
Dungeonette is an Atic Atac style game which is out now:
Deltastar, a Galaga clone is coming soon:
Nextoid:
Warhawk:
Existing Speccy games using the higher clock speeds:
Lemmings:
Spectron 2048
Music Creation Software:

It *can* load from tapes, but it has a built in SD card reader, all the hardware is based on tried and tested tech and addons, like the TBBlue board and DIVMMC. The machine is currently only for Kickstarter backers, so you'd have to buy someone's pledge off them to get it. But I'm sure they want to be able to produce more in future. The bare boards will be available for sure (which can be installed inside an existing Spectrum case), just the expense of manufacturing the new case means we might not see another production run of it unless demand is there.

talked to my friend about this, he wasn't overly enthused. He says there have been other similar emulated things before but the case is nice. I wonder if you've met him on any of the spectrum forums, he enters the crap game contest quite frequently

To bad we don't have enough developers to have our own crap game contest.

I'm looking forward to getting my Kickstarter unit. As an illiterate American C64 user I'm looking forward to seeing what the big deal is.
