I've got an Everdrive fully-loaded with games (Thanks Bernie!), and honestly it's a bit overwhelming. All of a sudden I have access to the entire library of PC Engine HuCard games. Yeah, I could poke around a bit to discover what I like, and I've been doing that quite a bit with good results. But I thought I'd ask you folks, who are way more versed in the Japanese PC Engine library than I, what Japan-only HuCards you recommend.
What are some of the best Japan-only HuCards, in your opinion? For bonus credit, don't just name them. Maybe share a little blurb about what you like about them as well.
Thanks!

Bubblegum Crash! - amazing game, there's a fan translation.
Hana Taka Daka - One of the best hucard shooters
Mizubaku Daibouken / Liquid Kids - One of the best platformers on the PC Engine.
Download - incredible graphics and cut scenes shooter, it's like a CD game. Worth playing just for the quotes "I CAN NOT FUCK UP FOR THIS."
Momotarou Katsugeki - great fun Hudson platformer
Son Son II - Solid platformer from Capcom/ NEC Avenue, there's a fan translation.
Bomberman '94 - A lot think '93 is the best, but I feel '94 is the best Bomberman experience on PC Engine.
Die Hard - A lot of people don't like this game but I think it's decent, it's an overhead run 'n gun, just go in with low expectations and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

ok, firstly, I'm kind of bummed Puzznic didn't do better in the poll. it was one of my earliest games, and the first thing I ever bought all the way from Japan. But if you like puzzle games, there's nothing so good as spending an hour one evening playing Puzznic. It's very accessible too. The aim is simple, you have to move blocks together to get them to disappear, and you have to remove all the blocks. It sounds like a kind of proto-candy crush. But the puzzles get very devious. What starts as being cathartic will eventually send you insane, because it's SO SIMPLE, yet SO HARD. And then you figure it out, and then you feel smart. Puzznic is a winner.

Momotarou Katsugeki - great fun Hudson platformer This this this.
It's a really well polished cute platformer to rival PC Genjin. Great music, good challenge and some neat touches to it. Navigating the menus is not essential but fairly easy to work out.

The first thing I recommend people to do is go through your rom set and rename Japanese games to what you know them as or will recognize them as. For many games, it just means cutting off the first few words of the title, so that it begins with "Shubibinman" or "Shada".
Zipang: 16-bit Japanese fantasy themed take on Solomon's Key.
Lady Sword: English translated dungeon crawler that looks and sounds like an early Mega Drive or Neo Geo game.
Bikkruiman World: English translated perfect port of Monsterland using the Bukkuriman license.
Blue Blink/Aoi Blink: English transkated platformer setup similar to SMB3. There is a little more involved to progressing through the overworld maps though and you control a chain of three characters who shoot projectiles.
Photograoh Boy/Gekisha Boy: English translated crazy stylized side scroller in which you are scored on snapping photos of objects when they are the most interesting.
Out Live; Emglish translated sci-fi mecha dungeon crawler.
Override: Over the top vertical shooter.

I don't wanna sound rude, but if it helps the Hucard library is not too overwhelming. Not even 300 games on it. I can't say there's more than 60 Hucard games truly worth playing. There's a bunch of CD games I'd like to try still but such a large percentage is in moon runes there isn't much I can do. I reckon it's about 100 Huey games that are worth playing IMO

Genji Tsushin Agedama - It's a side-scrolling platformer where the levels move at a set rate, for the first few levels. Then it becomes more of a standard platformer with free movement. It's got a really cool weapon system where your weapon changes based on how long you hold down the fire button. When you release the button it unleashes a different type of attack. And you get different weapon power-ups as you progress through the game. It's addicting and challenging. I haven't finished it yet, but I know I'm getting close.

I adore its tunes and they always put me in a good mood.
I still need to try that Out Live translation.
A note on Die Hard; it's soundtrack is so weird and unsuited to the game that it makes the game totally worth playing just to hear it. It has a style all its own.

Eternal City man. It's a great actiony adventure game. Like Veigues meets Metroid 1, sort of?
Psycho Chaser is a good vertical shooter also with an interesting player type (you're not a ship!), and the levels are more interesting at times because of it.

I couldn't really get into Eternal City sadly. Maybe I'll try again one day.

My go to recommendation is Gomola Speed. It's kind of a weird evolution of Snake where you have to collect the body parts of your robot snake and encircle orbs through a bunch of mazes reminiscent of Gauntlet. While I love it, reactions to it seem to be mixed, but if nothing else, it's a really unique, original game that I think should be experienced.
I'd also recommend Space Invaders Fukkatsu no Hi. It's a Galaga '88/'90 style update to Space Invaders, and while it's not quite as good as Galaga '88, it's a solid shooter that's worth your time.

Terra Cresta II. Play with speed constantly. It's fucking fun as hell. Great, under-appreciated vertical shootemup. This was one of those expensive games 10-20 years ago, so most discussions always revolved around its cost. Even I was guilty of discounting this game because I was pissed off I'd never actually buy it. However, it is actually a great, fun, exhilarating experience. BUT, for me, the fun is playing with the thrusters/speed. I think this is why I'm having so much fun with it.
ALSO: Final Soldier (sure, you know the Soldier Series, but aren't you sick of folks always saying BLADE is the best? BLADE *is* awesome, but that doesn't mean we should ignore FINAL SOLDIER) and...
Dragon Saber (a lot of folks prefer this to the original Dragon Spirit... it plays faster and supports 2-player co-op, has more impressive visual effects... but I think Dragon Spirit is still a great game... but if you don't like the slow pacing of DSpirit, then you definitely want DSaber)
How's that for some blurbs, you bastard? Thank you.

Hey Everyone! Thanks for the recommendations. I've gone through a few of them and have some thoughts... Momotarou Katsugeki - This was the first one I tried because the screen shots made it look like it'd be right up my alley. I did enjoy it, but not as much as I thought. A "rival to PC Genjin", Paul? That might've been overselling it a bit. Or maybe I just didn't get far enough into it. It did take me a bit to realize that I could select upgrades from the menu, and even then navigating the menu was a slight challenge due to the language barrier. That said, it's a great looking game and it is enjoyable, for sure. I just didn't like it as much as I hoped. Son Son 2 - I'd played this one before, but not for very long. This game I really liked a lot. Although, I was playing it with Jash and it took us both a few minutes to figure out just how the hell to enter the doors. Turns out you hold up for a couple seconds, instead of just pressing up like a normal-ass game. That hiccup aside, this was definitely one of the highlights. Genji Tsushin Agedama - Also really enjoyed this one, though I didn't get past the auto-scrolling part. I love the look of it, and it's a very unique game. Will definitely go back to try some more. Lady Sword - Huh...yeah...not for me. Atomic Robo Kid Special - Not one that was recommended, but I'm glad I checked it out. Really fun, even though the character size was a tad cumbersome. A cool cross between a platfomer(ish) and shoot-em-up. Hany on the Road/Hany in the Sky - Road is neat, Sky sucks. Nuff said. I've got a few more to sum up, but those are the ones off the top of my head. Jash also introduced me to some overhead adventure game starring a valkyrie, but I can't remember the name. That was fun! Keep the suggestions coming!
