Someone please explain this to me. I really don't understand why this is even a thing.
Its main feature list seems to consist of 'everything you can already do on your PC, with more restrictions.'
Am I missing something or is this just a waiting to drop?

It is a miniPC with a ton of Atari classics built-in. I think the large Atari collection is actually a big bonus, considering it's 2600 and arcade versions. Apparently the system can even run Steam Linux titles that meet the system's mid-grade specs. It's actually not a bad price for the hardware, assuming they manage to stick to the price AND the proposed specs. But you kinda have to want that particular hardware for it to make sense. At least it is keyboard and mouse-ready right out of the box. No futzing required.

Tommy Tallarico just announced a new Intellivision that sounds like the same kind of thing.
Collectards need more crap to buy, as their is only a finite amount of existing crap to buy.
If you're interested in a product featuring "everythung you can already do with a PC, with more restrictions... only with much more restrictions", Nintendo has a lineup of mini console bricks.

In my opinion, there's not much pre-famicom worth playing. I mean it was amusing for the time, but the jump in innovation and polish from an Atari 2600 to a Famicom is a huge gap. Plus the fact that it was largely a cash grab, with everyone tweaking successful formulas ad nauseum instead of innovating (the same could be said now, but there was so much less to work with back then)

Early PC games can still be playable, like stuff for the Apple II, because some of them have fundamentally great design. But most Atari 2600 titles are a bit too basic. But not all. There are still some fun ones in there that hold up OK.

The only ones I ever liked were keystone capers and Adventure

Lots of great pick up and play games on the Atari 2600 and lots of great multiplayer games too...
I am a little older than most on this board, but this was the machine I saved up for when I had my first paper route and I still have a lot of fondness for it..
Adventure still gets a lot of play on my PSP.

I don't get it. Its pretty much a Switch without the hybrid part and has collectard juice all over it. Would've been more interesting to see a proper successor to the Atari Jaguar without the crap.

Yep sums it up perfectly. Seriously a waste of money.

Once a company starts insulting people on Facebook, it's game over (this is starting to feel familiarly like the Spectrum Vega+ debacle)
