Post by: exodus on July 22, 2016, 07:18:05 PM Pretty sure all those gate of thunder and baseball things are just animations rather than scaling! and about half the sapphire stuff too. It can be hard to tell when they do it smoothly though. Post by: Necromancer on July 22, 2016, 08:25:18 PM This isn't the first time you've brought up that obvious point, so kindly give it a rest. Of course it's pretty much all sprite based effects, as it's well known that there's no dedicated hardware for scaling/rotation and the hardware design isn't well suited to do it in software. But guess what: it doesn't matter! Scaling is scaling and rotation is rotation; the only way you'd have a point is if someone were trying to argue that it's hardware scaling / rotation. Post by: nopepper on July 22, 2016, 08:46:44 PM Not sure what type of effect is being used, but I've always found the title screen in Zipang pretty impressive. Cool game also. Post by: Digi.k on July 22, 2016, 11:14:00 PM oh that rotating map kinda like a yoshi island rotating thing.. Post by: shubibiman on July 23, 2016, 08:37:33 AM I think that the sprite based effects are not as interesting as all the dev tricks used for genuine scaling. Scaling is about the same sprite actually scaling up or down, not about several sprites being used to make an animation. The same goes fort rotating. It seemed obvious to me. But thanks for the gifs though Post by: Black Tiger on July 25, 2016, 01:00:24 AM If you can't tell whether or not an effect is pre-rendered animation or realtime rendering unless someone tells you, how can one be more interesting than the other? And if an effect becomes interesting after someone claiming to be an expert says it's done in real-time, does it still cease to be as interesting after someone else somehow proves the first "expert" wrong? Post by: shubibiman on July 25, 2016, 06:59:57 AM If someone can't tell the difference between this : and actual scaling, then he should quit playing vintage games right away. He should even quit talking about them  Post by: Necromancer on July 25, 2016, 03:48:27 PM There's an obvious technical difference, sure, but what difference does it make practically? Either the effect is well executed and looks good or it doesn't; neither approach is going to automatically look better than the other. If you and exodus want to dismiss it all as fake and unworthy of discussion, that's fine. Nobody is forcing you to read this thread and cry repeatedly "it's not really scaling!". We know what it is, we know the sky is blue, we know water is wet. Post by: exodus on July 25, 2016, 08:41:36 PM I mean in the baseball example, it's four different sprites replacing each other, and this thread is meant to be about the power of the PCE doing things people say it can't. I bring it up because replacing sprites doesn't do that! but ultimately it doesn't matter I guess!

Post by: Digi.k on July 27, 2016, 02:36:32 PM kazekiri Post by: exodus on July 28, 2016, 02:09:24 AM that's an especially interesting one, because it's a bitmap of the dots with the wave effect that then transitions into an animation of the logo coming together. Looks extra fancy as a result! Post by: ClodBuster on July 28, 2016, 06:35:37 AM It doesn't matter.

Post by: esteban on January 12, 2017, 03:15:32 AM I forgot about this thread. Some great stuff. Post by: ParanoiaDragon on January 12, 2017, 08:27:06 AM Wow, the PCE version is alot cooler looking then the standard zoom in effect! Post by: saturndual32 on January 13, 2017, 10:11:41 PM Yeah, i wonder what type of effect the Mega CD used on that same scene. Post by: Punch on January 14, 2017, 06:49:59 AM Falcon joins the fray. (lol if the game DOES have realtime sprite scaling but the framerate is so choppy it's impossible to tell the difference between that and faked scaling with different sprites) Post by: Digi.k on January 16, 2017, 12:34:48 AM I don't know if it's the emulator or just the fact that the sega CD redoes lots of new stuff but removes on others... This was all I could find for Sega CD Completely forgot about Falcon Gunboat

Post by: Digi.k on January 16, 2017, 12:48:11 AM Cotton Post by: SuperGrafx on January 23, 2017, 04:56:07 AM Seeing some of these awesome graphical tricks (scaling, wavy patterns, etc) brings me back. But that begs the question...why WAS the background scrolling so damn choppy in YS III? And in YS Book 2 if you recall the choppy parallax background when you're racing towards the bell. Post by: Punch on January 23, 2017, 05:38:56 AM Do the 3d globe from SimEarth, it's neat because it is a textured 3d globe. Post by: Black Tiger on January 23, 2017, 06:08:15 AM Like Ys III, it was ported from the MSX version, which used dynamic tiles for those scrolling backgrounds. Hudson didn't bother to redo the animation, because it wasn't so unusual in Japan. Post by: Digi.k on January 23, 2017, 10:07:27 PM need to spend some time with that game but I haven't had a chance to even touch that big manual

Post by: Michirin9801 on January 24, 2017, 01:45:50 AM Why haven't I come across this thread before? It's amazing!! You know, this stuff is one of the reasons why I love the PC engine so much, all of these sweet visual effects impress the heck out of me! I mean seriously, we're talking about a 1987 game system with an 8 bit CPU and a single Background Layer doing all of this! Scaling, Stretching, line-scrolling, overlapping parallax scrolling, holy crap, this is witchcraft! And I LOVE it! This effect in particular: I don't remember who originally posted it, but it left me at awe, my jaw literally dropped, this is some Super Castlevania IV / Axelay stuff! I kinda know how it's being done but holy s*** seeing it in action, actually being done in a playable game... I'm at a loss of words... And I didn't even catch what game it was, can someone tell me? Post by: ccovell on January 24, 2017, 02:13:29 AM It's Metamor Jupiter. My review: chrismcovell.com/MetamorReview/ Post by: Michirin9801 on January 24, 2017, 03:09:49 AM Thanks ^^ I'm gonna check it out now! It looks amazing AND it's on a HuCard! The music could be better though, it's fine for what it is, but still... Post by: gilbert on July 27, 2017, 05:10:26 AM And it supports 4 simultaneous players even, while (I think) the SFC version supports only 2. Unfortunately with all 4 players on screen it's not very pleasant, that it sometimes run choppily with low frame rate. After some of the players die it becomes smooth again. Post by: esteban on July 27, 2017, 12:05:12 PM digi.k... you are teh man. The PC Engine Pixelization Project (PCEPP) continues...
