Hi there! New pc engine owner here. Got a great deal on the briefcase today: $60! I was told it wasn't working without more detail but it looks like it's the cd add-on that's not working.
It powers on but initially seemed like it wasn't working at all otherwise. Through some troubleshooting I did find that the laser moves and lights up but when I put a disc in it wouldn't spin. If I press or spin a cd (mess with it, if you will) when it's inserted it does start to spin but I then get a read error.
Maybe it's that gear? As a side note/issue I took the thing apart to take a look but found the ribbons were damn near impossible to get off. I did manage to get the big one most of the way off but lost my nerve when it got stuck near the end.
Anyways, hoping someone can help me because my ocd/add is gonna be on fire until I get this sorted!

Yeah, you have to be very careful when taking those ribbon cables out. The larger one does get stuck easy unless you pull it from the correct angle.
The smaller of the two ribbons comes out very easily once you pop down the small white pressure connector.

Mine seems to want to sort of tilt a bit every time. Thanks!

Update: I actually got it to play a music cd. I sort of nudged the laser and then still poked at the cd. It took a sec but it ran. The only game I have is burnt to an hp cd-r. The guy I bought it from is actually a game programmer so I assumed it would just work so maybe that's also an issue?

Is the middle gear for the lens motor yellow? Most likely the gear is bad. What happens is overtime the center hole for the gear swells which doesn't let it spin freely anymore which creates more work for the motor to move the lens. Lots of times you can spin it by hand and the lens motor will start going again but will then stay locked when trying again later on a cold start. Replace the gear to fix the problem. Don't just wipe grease/lube of some sort all over it to try and fix it. I can't tell you how many times I've opened up these drives to work on them to find lube everywhere from someone trying to get the gears to move instead of just replacing said gear in the first place.

Hey that's awesome, thanks. Now I just need to track one down and then try to get the bloody ribbons off. It really feels like I could break them if I'm not careful.

The ribbons should easily come out. If it's stuck, then try gently moving it from side to side.
