Makes me wonder if will eventually find a North American Arcade card proto. My sources from back in the day indicate that they were definitely planning on releasing it in the US along with World Heroes 2. Though if they were planning on being packed together I don't know.

it baffles me that they would even consider releasing a US version of the Duo R, when they still had piles of TG16 and black duo hardware for years to come even after the PCE was dead worldwide...

I believe the reason was that NEC Japan stopped making the original Duos around the same time that the Duo launched in the US, so if TTI wanted to do another run they'd have to be Duo-Rs. Obviously they didn't sell through the initial run of Duos so this never became an issue.

That's pretty friggin' awesome.
I haven't even decided which theory is most reasonable (to explain its existence).

They may have not wanted to do the black TurboDuo at all, but a delay on the Duo R might've made them decide "fuck it, TTi is probaly only going to last 2 - 3 years tops".

The duo R was actually cheaper to make than the black duo? Thats surprising.

It's common knowledge that Duo R and Duo RX are budget version of the original Duo. They even removed some features such as the headphone jack and the port for an external battery.

Also the price dropped with each model. The RX was the cheapest.

I didn't know the Duo had a port for an external battery... As in it didn't need to be plugged in to work if it was connected to a battery? I just looked at my PC Engine Duo and I can't find any such thing.

It used the same DC in as the power supply.

OK, so that doesn't count as anything being removed, then. Unless they just changed the power plug parameters, which wouldn't necessarily save them any money.
