"Preserving hardware" while scratching up your expensive CD-ROM discs. Hopefully this will drive down real hardware prices a bit.

Why would it scratch up the disks?

2021... and we still can't get 4k output for these retro FGPA systems? Ugh No 6 button pad, with optional 3button configuration? No turbo switches? Would be great to buy and replace the fpga unit with a MisTer fpga

Why would it scratch up the disks? I stopped inserting valuable discs into that style of feeder after every one of them ended scratching discs. With many single PC Engine/TG-16 games being more vauable than this device or real hardware, it's not worth gambling with collectibles just to run emulation. For what it is I'm surprised the price is so cheap. A much better deal than their previous fpga consoles. I also just realized that this must mean that kevtris finally got over his grudge against the PC Engibe.

I haven't had any trouble with slot-feeders, but I can see how poorly designed ones could create issues. Thankfully, it's easy to make a play-backup of PCE games.
I don't know a lot about the Kevtris / PCE clash, but my limited understanding was that it was more an issue of people and personalities than technology and games.

I hope they considered phat pce cards will fit into there too One or two of the pictures has the right angle to see that a "fat" HuCard like SFII' or Populous should just fit in. Looks like there is a little cutout for them.

I like the idea of a PC Engine-specific machine which acts just like an original PC Engine, and the potential perfection that FPGA could bring to such a dedicated device. I'm not particularly fond of the specific choice of cartridge slot or CD slot.
But none of this will matter until either: (a) next summer when they open up to take orders (briefly until they sell out), or (b) probably 2022, when they will likely actually ship the devices.
In the meantime, I'll probably spend a bunch of time proving to myself that the MiSTer FPGA core for PC Engine is as close to perfect as possible (and perhaps trying to fix any imperfections). At least that device is here today, even if it's more of a do-it-yourself-ers delight than a "polished product in a beautiful case".

I was super interested in the Mega Sg/Super Nt to start (and I'm sure this system will be quality), but yeah, the MiSTer project feels like a better investment for me at this point.

This machine is likely going to be a bit less crazy when they open for orders. The Pocket represented Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, and Game Gear, as well as undisclosed future cores. That is a huge target market, with potentially millions of interested parties.
On the other hand, PC Engine is a much more moderate market. Even if you consider that this would open the market up to new people, the original cards and discs have a reputation for being too Japanese-centric and overpriced, which would probably dissuade some of those new participants. And the MiSTer core is perfect (at least as far as reported issues on released games at the moment), so that's a clear alternative.
Of course, this is Analogue, so it's certain that the machines will selll out (in many cases to scalpers), but it probably won't be in as little as 10 minutes this time.
