I had an idea to do some of these, if enough people find this interesting, I will do more.

This is a pretty pedestrian (i.e. ordinary) split of the layers between sprites and background, and I look forward to you finding some more creative use of the PCE's capabilities in other games. I've not looked at many games myself, but I was very interested to see the totally different approaches taken by the "Legend of Xanadu" developers vs the "Anearth Fantasies" developers.

You should definitely make more. I always find this stuff interesting. Also, bizhawk emulator supports LUA scripts, so you could do much more analysis in realtime with that combo (color counts, sprite usages, sprite pixel screen coverage, etc).
Also:
It's pretty easy to do.

Hehe. Someone should not do this to Princess Maker (as far as I remember, applied to both I & II) to turn this place into NSFW fest!

That's pretty cool, but I might keep these more simple for the moment. Here's a new one.

Not a lot of clever effects here, but it does show the sheer amount of sprites being thrown about.

How about one for Ys III? There are nice nice juicy parts that use a lot of sprites to cover up corners of the cell animated pseudo layers.

Definitely enjoying all these!! the gate of thunder ones are especially interesting - hadn't thought of how they might use those sprites integrated with parallax to create a greater illusion.

This one I found particularly interesting, especially how the opening scenes are handled.
