I think many of us OBEY'rs have the same dream to visit or spend extended periods of time in Japan, and I've always put it off. Like, for nearly 20 years I've found some crack excuse not to go. But sometime in 2017 I forced myself to set aside a savings and gave myself an ultimatum, lol. I forced myself to NEVER eat meat again until I actually booked my flight! This coming spring break March 14-23 I'm planning making the leap over to Japan. Well, I'm not just planning, I booked the trip!
It's been 22 months and I finally feel financially confident to go! I've decided to be kind to my wallet this trip and stay away from Tokyo and Akihabara and stick to the southern side and visit my friend Electrohaze! in Fukuoka. I've been studying up a bit of speech and working (horridly) at re-learning hiragana, but could probably use some pointers on other things I should prepare myself for. Any tips? In my studies I've found that most of the area isn't much like the bigger city like in Tokyo with gaming stores around every corner or Hard-Offs coming up my arse, but I've scoped out a few to check out regardless.
I'll be spending 6 nights between Fukuoka and areas just outside of town. We're planning on doing some biking, hiking, and checking out some temples and hot springs!
Also- I'll be flying in and staying two nights in Pudong, China (one night on my way in, and one night on the way back) on 17 hour layovers so I hope to get out and walk around just a bit in between passing out in the hotel, lol

Hey, UPDATE! *** Obviously with the amazing timing on my end the Coronavirus made it impossible (without a 14 day quarantine of myself) to travel in and out of China in March 2020. So I was fully refunded my airfare and rebooked a flight directly to teh Japans! I'll be flying in one day earlier (without the China layover) and get an additional night in Fukuoka! Staying at an Air B&B and saving a few bucks where I wound up paying a bit more for the direct flight, but we're still on! I plan on taking a brazillion pictures of everything I see. So be ready for a mass upload! Again, if anyone has experience with traveling in that area or on a plane for that long of time, feel free to comment or drop me a PM.

Again, if anyone has experience with traveling in that area or on a plane for that long of time, feel free to comment or drop me a PM. While it isn't necessary, I find noise-cancelling headphones to help with fatigue on longer flights (anything 4-5 hours and up). Are you meeting somebody in Fukuoka ? It's a nice place, but it's not particularly English-friendly... it would help if you plan ahead and/or know somebody locally to help you out. Please avoid the impulse to rent a car (although coming from North America, this can be difficult); plan your trips via trains - it's much more pleasant. Each time I visit, I continue to be puzzled by various traffic signs/behaviors which are not obvious to us.

So I'll have a guide for a few days. My Air BnB is located pretty close to the airport as well, so it should be a decent set up for my first EVER experience! I don't plan on renting a car, maybe a bike rental tho to pedal around the area. I also scoped out some running trails and plan to take advantage of the warmer spring weather! I plan on eating ramen by the pound, lol!

Again, if anyone has experience with traveling in that area or on a plane for that long of time, feel free to comment or drop me a PM. Bring an additional sweater or fleece. It can get cold on flights (depends on the airline, some run their planes quite frigid, others too warm), especially night flights. Get up and walk up and down the length of the plane at times, do some stretches etc. to keep the blood flowing. Although most airlines offer complimentary drinks outside of breakfast/lunch/dinner servings, I find it pleasant to have an extra bottle of water on hand to sip from throughout the flight to keep from dehydrating. Make sure you buy it after you've gone through all security checks at the airport/lounge though, or they'll make you dispose of it before you even get on the plane. And most importantly, bring a PCE-GT and plenty of Hu-Cards! Beats the lame on board entertainment.
