My boyfriend and I spent the weekend recapping a Turbo Duo. The recap went well. However, after reassembly the CD-rom has started acting up.
When I hit run, the CD takes off spinning very fast and doesn't read the disk.
Last night, my boyfriend adjusted the VR105 potentiometer slightly. I think the screwdriver slipped a little bit in one of the rotations so it's unclear where its original position is. Did this mess things up? Can it be read/adjusted back?
I really need help:
1) Either figuring out how to get a reading off of these potentiometers, they look different than anything I'm finding online
2) Potential ways to fix this problem?
3) Somewhere I can buy a working, RGB modded turbo duo

Usually the spinning up fast is a sign of a worn out/bad CD lens. Was it doing this prior to the recap? Also, sometimes the lens can be adjusted to fix this. Try turning the V102 pot to the left slightly. If that doesn't fix it then a new CD lens is probably needed.
I repair Duos so if you don't want to mess with it anymore I'd be happy to work on it for a fee. I also sell recapped/modded DUOs

No, this error wasn't happening before the recap. It was a 100% vanilla unit until he recapped it. After recap everything was still fine. During RGB mod installation afterwards he ended up bench testing with a nearby monitor several times and noticed during SOME of tests the cd drive wouldn't work (same issue as described above). When he first saw the fast spinning, he reassembled the entire unit just thinking it was a issue of everything not being seated correctly. We still had the fast spinning cd issue after everything put back together correctly. He then disassembled everything again, and with no screws in he put the upper shell back on the console and put some pressure on top of the cd drive lid, and found the drive worked correctly every time he did this. If he let go of the pressure, it would go back to fast spinning again. Then after noticing that, he put it all back together and the laser read the disc no problem again without pressure(huh?) Well after all that, he finished up the RGB mod successfully but now the CD drive spins fast as heck every time, pressure or not, fully assembled or not. There is nothing we can see anywhere blocking the lens from moving mechanically. When the cd drive first starts spinning with a disc, you can see the motor move a tiny amount but not much. More like a wiggle if anything, but maybe that's normal. We're guessing because the laser is already seated all the way inward and just doesn't need to move yet? With a disc off, we can see the laser pop up a little and then lower its lens again. And to correct earlier statement, while he adjusted the 105, he put it back where it was originally since he marked it so that shouldn't be an issue down the road if we can get this cd drive spinning correctly again. So, would you proceed to pot adjustment next or is there anything you can tell from what I described?
And thanks for the offer to help fix it. If we can't get it in the next day or so we'll definitely be mailing it your way.

Does the drive start spinning really fast as soon as the power is turned on for the system or do you have to hit the run button first like you are loading a CD game?

You have to hit the run button first and then it takes off. So I marked pot locations and tested in both directions for all 5 and that made no difference. I fixed my issue however by lifting the entire cd mechanism up, spraying some white lithium grease on the gears, and pulled on the cd laser track (whatever it's called) to stress the gears all the way to the motor some. I suspected based on my earlier experience I described that the motor was stuck internally. I guess I was correct because when I reseated the entire cd mechanism everything worked every attempt and has for 3 days. Thanks for the help and taking the time to respond to my posts.

Glad you found a solution! Sounds like you are already pretty knowledgeable about these things. Feel free to pop in anytime you have a problem or some wisdom to share.
