Some guys on Twitter are discovering that the original plastic sleeves that came with HuCard games are also now peeling off the card labels. They're turning to gum now, folks; time to check your HuCard collection! I know what I'm doing tonight!

Went through my Hucards on the weekend and found 5 (of about 60) with a bit of stickiness to them. They were all the original style and not the textured later ones... Pretty much the same story here about 3 to 5 out of 50 seemed to have problems. Was kinda like peeling a sticker off plastic, no damage to any of the cards. Threw them in some card holders after that.

I've had the back of a manual get damaged by a sticky card sleeve before. Tried to pull the sleeve away from it as carefully as I could but it ended up tearing the color off of the manual with it. Other than this one time, which was over two years ago, I haven't had any sticky card sleeves wreck anything.

Here is the thing - if the sleeves are indeed breaking down, then the plastics are leeching into whatever is next to them. Whether this could damage the functionality of the HuCards seems unlikely, but it appears they will eventually fuse to the Hucards. Probably best to bail on these things for something made of another material.
On a related note, there are similar issues with PVC record sleeves. I have records where the surface has been damaged by outgassing from PVC outer sleeves. It leeches right through the paper jacket and leaves a cloudy looking "film" on the vinyl record. The film cannot be removed and causes audible distortion during playback. Most picture discs sold from the 70's to today use these PVC sleeves... The worst part of this? It will also affect any records stored on either side of it as it doesn't need direct contact to leech and bond to the vinyl.

So, back in March when this topic came up, I sprayed the sticky sleeves with WD40 and let em sit a bit. After about an hour, I wiped them down with a microfiber cloth, and they have been sitting out since. They are no longer sticky, are not greasy and you really can't tell the difference between them and the ones that were not sticky before... New life or maybe just another year?

I haven’t had my duo out for a while so I should really check. If you’re really desperate Tobias sells sleeves.

I read this thread while lurking a while back and decided to take all my hueys out of their sleeves for good. No tragedies among them, thankfully. I know at least 10 of them were seymour onion sleeves since I bought a pack some time ago, but I don't want to take a chance with those either even if they have more time before they break down. I'd picked up a new copy of Don Doko Don recently and the sleeve peeled parts of that label off, so I've seen it happen. My father in law does woodworking projects for fun, he made be a custom box to hold the loose cards - so that's my solution for now.

Yeah my sealed Blazing Lazers which I bought from some euro guy (probably a Euro turbo pack-in) got the oily sleeve, same with my sealed copy of Falcon. Thankfully no damage was done to them and the sleeves got thrown into the garbage.
Yet another advantage of having games on cards I thought I suggested this here, but maybe it was on the other wannabe PCEFX lol Fantasy Flight makes a better sleeve IMHO. The plastic is slightly thicker, and they have one that fits a HuCard good as well. We used it for Atlantean. and it also doesn't have that stupid UltraPro foily circle. but any TCG sleeves will work. They are made to not deteriorate 7000$ magic cards.

Its funny that you mention this Ark. I just started getting back into playing some PCE games, and some of the sleeves were a bit gunky and I remember reading about this on PCEFX. Well time to go through my games, and get rid of these things. Which fantasy flight sleeves did you use in particular?

I think HuCards are 54 mm x 85 mm x 3 mm, and the options they offer are all around that: Standard European board game: 59 x 92 Standard card game: 63.5 x 88 Standard American board game: 57 x 89 I guess I'm wondering how much the thickness of the HuCard affects the fit, and whether the standard American board game sleeves would be too snug.

I attributed this to my hucards being too close to proximity of some of the Bernie products I purchased from him a few years back. Good to know.
