My friend is going to Japan again, and he'll probably pop by Akihibara, so I'm going to ask him to pick me up a thing or two. Is there anything that's cheaper to get in Japan than it is elsewhere? Nothing bulky like boxed units, but primarily I'm thinking PC Engine hardware and software

I was in Japan last year in the Tokyo and Osaka area and I did see PC Engine stuff but the savings to me were not enough to justify bringing it back. I did see a Supergrafx at the time that was like $50 less than what it would have been online. I didn't get it because I had to consider all the stuff I had already bought and I was out of space lol.
My brother is actually in Japan now and I gave him a list of some pc engine games I want. Nothing major commons like Ys IV that I have never picked up.

The other thing I'd have to consider is that it would have to be something pretty obvious - it's his holiday, so I can't have him spending hours combing for rare games at bargain prices. In fact, he got me Bomberman '94 last time, but spending a long time searching for specific games is out too. Maybe I'll just ask for another Core unit.

I would totally do that on my vacation. I think the OP gets the idea that asking their friend to comb through stores(unless they are into that) puts a strain on their limited time of traveling. Example, I was traveling with a buddy overseas and he was trying to find a hat for his friends new baby that was unique and cute. We would hit a bunch of stores on his quest that we'd not normally bother to patron, but never found anything that fit the bill (most of the baby clothing was standard fare that one can find stateside). After a few days, I was getting agro b/c it was OUR vacation, not a fetch quest for his friend. I got over it by just picking up beers from the c-stores and drank outside while he was searching. Also, for the OP about Akihibara, I doubt there are any deals nowadays unless you're looking for loose mahjong or sports HuCards, but it's def a place to hit for the sights and sounds. I think it's better to hit the Book-offs and other used stores for deals. Selection will be less but prices will be better. And I would venture further from the downtown...get a train and head out to the 'burbs of Tokyo. You get to see a slower paced side of the city and might happen upon a mom'n pop game store.

I wouldn't ask someone going on a vacation to hunt down something specific for me. Now, for someone spending months over there, say, teaching English or something. Heck yeah, I would ask them maybe.

Unless you find some more local shops, the prices are going to be closer to eBay. A lot of the good stuff has been picked off by (white) foreigners. Arcades also aren't what you would expect them to be, be warned.
