I've heard stories that the Jaguar was quite hard to code for, and that most games released actually tended to run on the "handler" CPU rather than the two 32 bit processors, as intended (that's a dumb way of putting it, but essentially it had a 68000, like the Megadrive or Amiga, and two custom RISC chips. The 68000 was supposed to manage resources, but people supposedly ended up using that to power games, since it was a popular chip and people knew how to code for it).
Well that makes me wonder what could actually be achieved on the console. Has there ever been software, either homebrew or official that has really pushed the console?

Probably homebrew, as none of the official games that are around look decent enough for a 64-bit console. You might want to check the homebrew CD titles too.

I feel like that's quite impressive. This was going against the PlayStation and the N64, correct?

I feel like that's quite impressive. This was going against the PlayStation and the N64, correct? It actually came out in 1993 and was competing with the 16 bit systems. By the time the playstation came out in 1995 the Jaguar was not doing very well. I love my Jaguar for the same reason I like my Turbografx system. Odd systems that did not do well when they came out. I really love doom on there it was pretty impressive for when it came out. Rayman and Alien v Predator is also pretty good on the system. If you want to see software that pushed the system check out Battlesphere Gold. That was a late homebrew release that really pushed the system.

I remember GAME knocking these out for about £40 long after withdrawal from sale. Should have picked one up in hindsight.

It was also trying to compete against the 3DO.

Jaguar looks sick, sounds like there's quite the community for it too.

It was also trying to compete against the 3DO. Poor 3DO I totally forgot about it and yes they were out around the same time. There is actually quite the community around the jaguar. For a system that really did not do well it has a really strong following. There will soon be a flash cart for it so I expect even more interest in it soon. The system and especially the cd player have gotten really expensive recently. I'm glad I got my system with the cd some time ago. For those of you that use RGB the Jaguar puts out a beautiful RGB picture even though the system was packed with an RF adapter.

When it comes to the jag at least from what i've heard it's architect made it difficult to program for. If,hardware wasn't such a mishmash maybe it would have fair better but who knows.Funny enough for the longest time no one wanted a jaguar but now it's collectable and prices have spiked up for it.By the way here's a interesting video on unreleased jag games. Interesting enough as well there is a jaguar flash cart in the works.

I own one of these toilet seats and if you ask me, the price to admission to crap isn't worth it. Yeah there are a few gems, but you almost have to pay a mortgage payment to get some of the better titles nowadays. Its unfortunate that most of the sought after homebrewn titles and ports (Out of this World) are so expensive but one can hope that an everdrive device (once its released) will make it easier to access some of the better titles. As it stands right now, my Laseractive gets more play time. lol

The hardware wasn't just hard to develop for, it was actually buggy. Not buggy like the Saturn, where isn't not actually buggy but the interactions are too complex for some people to fully understand the nature of the limitations, but Pentium multiplication error buggy.

That's interesting. I remember hearing that the dev kit they sent out was legitimately bugged, is that what you're referring to? Or even after the fix they rolled out?

It was also trying to compete against the 3DO. And the 32X, which despite a short lifespan arguably has a better library (than Jaguar) with a handful of key games.

I did think of the 32X and two other systems,CDI and Amiga CD32 but like the sega 32X I didn't think anyone would remember them.If we go by sales the 3D0 beat all of them.
